Re: Iron crankshaft welding

True cast 'Steel', as opposed to 'Iron', cranks have been produced, and will become more common Steel is much more difficult to cast than Iron ...... temperature, pouring & shrinkage etc ...... so production engineers avoid it where possible Nodular and ADI cranks, have been developed to such a degr...

Re: Ford vs Ferrari

If I remember my schooling Birmingham was where the industrial revolution more or less began. Yes, more or less ..... some would put it 'down the road' at Coalbrookdale ..... but it took off in Brum Also got the heck bombed out of it in WW2 Not so much, Coventry had it worse, although we had regula...

Dave ....... binya arhkid Birmingham, or 'Brummigem' colloquially, hence the name There are at least a hundred dialects within about a twenty five mile radius ....... 'Black Country' & 'Yam-Yam' being the other better known ...... all much of a muchness to the untrained ear, but woe betide anyone wh...

Re: Ford vs Ferrari

One of the few films I've watched lately that I've enjoyed enough to watch again ...... and subsequently bought the DVD Ok, you can nitpick some of the detail, as ever with a film of this genre, but it gets the spirit of the deal across well The guy who plays Henry II (I think he was in 'Fargo' as w...

Re: Reducing the pin hole size of a press fit rod

As said, before you put the bush in the rod chamfer both sides of the pin hole, 30-40 thou width is enough, with a large enough 45deg countersink, in a drill press or mill etc Make the bush slightly over length as regards the pin hole width, say 100 thou When the bush is in and centred, get a couple...

Re: Reducing the pin hole size of a press fit rod

I've done it once, and it's not a commercial proposition, but if you can do the work yourself ...... You are going to have to give some thought to the heated rod/bushing installation. Chamfered edges, etc. You will only have one chance to get it in there. This is the crux of it Hone the rod end to a...

Re: Performance Gains of Downdraft Head vs Sidedraft Head

Cosworth were doing it in the sixties with the old pre-crossflow (and it was also done on the later X-Flow head by others) Ford 4cyl cast iron head, by brazing in 'high port' sleeves

So it's nothing new and it's obviously worth it

Re: Misfiring, then rod noise?

The 4-cyl Subaru rog brg replacement may be easy. Mains not so. What are the odds of this just being the rods? If you're thinking of maybe trying to do it in the chassis, I doubt it's going to happen As KnightEngines says, they usually eat the crank, and normally rod also, when they rattle ...... s...

Re: First valve job with stones

Nice work Steve Even with 'unfashionable' equipment, with an amount of care and thought the right person can achieve good results, which is ironically part of the 'problem' Otherwise, as regards equipment to spin the stones, I don't always use the original 'grinder' ..... if you fashion or buy a sui...

Re: Question for those who build and sell engines

Unfortunately in this type of business it’s generally in the nature of trade to try to help people, aside of any financial consideration ….. so a lot of owners become sitting ducks With that kind of mindset we’ve all taken on jobs knowing it just might be another ‘boomerang’, despite the impending s...

Re: Question for those who build and sell engines

bob460 Exactly ...... not all customers are 'idiots' and not all 'engine builders' are blameless I've never had to defend my position in court ...... although I've appeared as an 'expert' witness ...... and it's not exactly unknown for me to say a flat no to the occasional 'complaint' But compromis...

Re: Question for those who build and sell engines

First thing is you need is insurance …… no ifs not buts The second, if you offer a more ‘personal’ service, is the ability to judge your customer, and you’ve either got this or you haven’t ….. regardless develop the ability to walk away from anything that doesn’t smell right ....... this is the hard...

Re: Computer controlled enforcement of speed limits in the EU

Funnily enough I was thinking of Red Barchetta and the 'motor law' a few days ago, relevance etc

Has to be the best part of forty years old, and based IIRC on an even earlier short story

I guess it was obvious even then ..... like a train coming down the track

Re: I Still Like Pushrods, They're Still Viable

The last bastion of pushrod engines is obviously in Vee engines, where packaging convenience, but mostly cost , has made it difficult for some manufacturers to abandon them to history Like for like they cannot usually compete with multi valve ohc engines in most 'light' vehicle categories, not least...
