Re: Fatal Mistakes....

I bought a 78 Skylark for a drag racing. I was buying parts for it and the NAPA guy talked me into buying his 77 Skylark with no title for parts. My wife's son had a cherry 76 skylark with a knock in the odd fire V6. Between the donor car and the nice one I managed to find 6 pistons that weren't cra...

Re: Ring Pack Thickness: Question

"There is no reason to even use a 1/16 ring any more. It’s a waste of power." It has always been my understanding the thin rings don't last as long. The auto manufacturers started using them when the fuel injection allowed them to make the rings last longer. The ultra-thin rings and pistons cost mo...

It's just a 350 block, $50 everywhere. Maybe start over with a fresh block.

Re: ICON 9929 Piston Specs

I didn't see anything about the usage for the engine. You could always deck the engine while it is being bored to get where you want to be.

Re: Edlebrock E Tec 170 on 350

My response has to do with my belief that Edelbrock stuff is over priced. In my experience, most of the stuff suffers from bad machining and core shift all at 10-20 percent over what others charge for the same thing. $1700 dollars should get you more than a head that only flows slightly better than ...

Re: Edlebrock E Tec 170 on 350

A quick look on Summit shows them at $858.50 each or $1718.00/pair. Surely there are better heads for that price.

Re: Vortec CT350 crate in a street car.

What kind of car? Weight, transmission, gear, tire diameter etc. Are you running open exhaust? Quick details about the engine combo. I have mildly massaged Vortec heads on all of my street cars. My 71 C20 has a 400 with those heads. Although impressive for what it is, regular Vortecs are really smal...

Re: PCV vs EVAC

If that pcv system had a breather, it wouldn't build vacuum in the crankcase. Just like a vacuum pump, it needs a sealed engine to create vacuum. Now THAT'S a very valid point. In effect the breather is whatever is getting past the rings. That is what I was saying in my post. If the engine develops...

Re: PCV vs EVAC

If the engine is sealed and has no atmospheric breather, the system pictured will only function under crankcase pressure. I never liked the idea of oil saturated fumes going into the intake system and displacing a proper mixture. When I got rid of my pcv and started using regular breathers, I had oi...

Re: Vortec CT350 crate in a street car.

For what its worth my sons G/crate 330 HP Vortec 350 runs 10.6s @ 123 @ 3200 pounds, no porting on the heads, .417 lift @ the valve. I'm trying to understand how this is possible. I have a 3500 lb, (with me in it), 78 X body. The engine is a 415 solid roller with a Holley 300-25, 800 dp, Track 1 he...

Re: Things that make me worry and scratch my head!

Years back when I used to be a fleet mechanic I had a driver pull in with a Kenworth powered by a Caterpillar C10. The guy hops out, looks me in the eyes dead serious and states "Hey it's running kind of rough I think it needs new spark plugs". I forget what the actual issue was but it sure as hell...

Re: dumb q on installation of hydraulic lifters

"They" used to say to soak the lifter to fill them with oil. I heard later on that not doing so helps break in because it takes a minute or so for the lifter to pump up fully relieving some of the spring load.

Re: Chevy 383 stroker build

I have to wonder if any of the aftermarket Vortec style heads have burn characteristics as good the GM head.
