Re: bronze wall repair tools
I used to use those a lot back in the 70s-80s I still have all of the tooling and quite a guides. I think Winona was the original supplier, before they merged with Van Norman. I think at 1 time Goodson was a division of winona, I think I still have old catalogs from that era. The tread in guide was ...

Re: Rod bushings: bore bauge vs. AG-300 vs. pin gauges
Im not sure about the radius of the AG300 as compared to your Mititoyo, but I would think that the snap gauge would have a much larger contact radius than either of the other gauges? If thats true I would think that would all but eliminate the surface finish as a variable. Is it your AG300, or the s...

Re: Cooling system pressure tested
I'm going to declare the patient cured. Or at least, I feel comfortable that its cooling system is not going to overpressure. (One of the hoses that ruptured had a burst rating of 250psi!!) The key I think is a combination of an overdriven instead of underdriven water pump pulley (the manufacturer ...

Re: 1966 350SS block.
As I recall the 350" engine was available ONLY in Camaros in 1967 and this 350 block had small journal crankshaft. Same block casting # for 302", 327" and 350" in 1967 only. Hi Bill, the RS/SS '67 Camaro was most definitely a L/J unit. It had a L/J "dimpled" rod with t...

Re: This is for Joe Sherman!
I raced around Joe in the 80s, he was always very , fast and didn't spend a fortune doing it, common sense approach. What I would have liked to witness is the 1970s Joe Sherman, I have a strong suspicion he was and absolute terror down there around Orange county, his mean green Chevelle was so ridi...

Re: This is for Joe Sherman!
Cool stuff!!! Joe, I always wondered... was that first year 1967 350 a large journal crank or did chevy use a standard small journal 327 block and put a 3.48 stroke small journal crank in them for the first year? Not to interrupt Joes thread (I haves always admired him!) but I have had several of t...

Re: Tight cam bore, SBC
I feel your pain! After years of doing this stuff and all of the problems, I keep all of the old bearings and plugs that are stripped from a block that I am working on. If a problem pops up on assembly at least I have some reference to how it fit previously. The cam fit is the first thing I check, b...

Re: 327 SBC large journal junker
You know I do remember Badger offering this piston and both sets I had were defective. There was too much clearance in the way the skirt was finished. I think you are right about the application of 365/375 HP 327 as well 340/360 and the 350/325 (L79) version. On the rod bolts I must agree with what ...

Re: 327 SBC large journal junker
It looks like you have a forged LJ 327 crank and those are fairly rare. I think the piston would theoretically be 11 to 1 with a 64cc head. I would measure the piston at the pin center line and then at the bottom of the skirt. In my opinion that piston does not like excessive cyl wall clearance, and...

Re: The true compression of stock 426 street hemi !
I have messed mostly with GM stuff but going by NHRA supplied specs. about all of the "old" engines I checked were nowhere close to being able support an advertised compression ratio. Heads were usually very large and the blocks always needed decked even using a crank with an additional .0...

Re: A stock 327 rod?
Hello, I am certainly no expert but in my experience there are 5 or more "styles" of small journal 11/32" rods. The "early" rods used in the 50s and very early 60s were very light duty and I would never use them in a true performance application. In "about" 65 the ...

Re: ID small block chevy
"When doing either combination the block used needs to be a (approx) a 65 or newer or the counterweights of the crankshaft will not fit in the crankcase." Right! I call them, "round bottom", blocks because the older blocks before the 327 crank were flat at the bottom of the cyli...

Re: ID small block chevy
If there would have been small journal 307's they could have been stroked 283's!!! Thanks Randy I have built 307's that had no idea that it was a reduced bore 327... In fact it thought it was a stroked 283! Thanks, Charlie Early Chevy IIs (67 down) with a v8 used a special block, both 283 an...
