That is what makes the high speed ignition retard work properly.

... "never promote a new product, before you can sell it". Jr had a business degree from USC, and knew that when you show the public a new shiny thing, they will want it right away, and if they can't get it right away, they will move on to the next shiny thing. It depends on timing. In st...

Re: coolant conundrum
..... Wow! So pH of the coolant water mix is an indicator of whether the corrosion inhibitor is working???! What is the range of values they indicate “working” vs. “not working”? (My other hobby that receives a lot more of my time is brewing and I have a VERY accurate and calibrated pH meter that I...

Re: why not smooth casting surfaces on conrods and the crank?
In the old days...way before the Internet, we used to take those factory steel rods and polish them, then have them shot peened. They sure looked purdy before being peened. This was just to add strength to the rod and eliminate stress risers. We used to paint the valley and crankcase with glyptal to...

Re: coolant conundrum
...How long are these anti-corrosion + water wetter products actually supposed to work for?... It depends upon how the engine is used, but generally around five years. There are two primary additives; One for corrosion protection. You can test coolant using litmus strips and it will tell you the st...

Re: using a "scope"
I use a scope all the time. When teaching at tech school the best scopes we had were the Pico scopes installed on laptops. Since semi-retired my home shop I have an older Snap-on Modis scan tool and scope. ... You might be the guy who knows the answer to this question. To wit: Is it possible to use...

Re: Aluminum vs iron heads on a 9:1 daily driver
Maybe you can point me in the direction of where I can find out how many Diesel and industrial motors are made with Aluminum heads? Pretty common. My Ford 6.7 Power Stroke(PS) diesel uses a CGI block and aluminum heads. The 6.7 has used aluminum heads since inception in 2011, so it is hundreds of t...

Re: Engine Diagnosis
It starts and runs fine cold. It turns bad once the engine gets some heat in it. I'd be looking at stuff that changes with heat. Maybe a stuck heat riser. Maybe heat in the ignition module. Something is changing. Even valve lash.

Re: Starting engine on engine stand
It should be fine on an engine storage cradle. I used to start them up with them sitting on a couple tires. Nothing ever fell off the floor. I don't think I would ever do one on an assembly stand.

Re: compression check on a never run engine
Biggest influence will come to cam's intake closing point and engine cranking speed. For consistency cylinder-to-cylinder, you need a good starter and a strong battery being kept on a high charge. If this is a street solid cam, it would expect to see a good engine deliver at least 160PSI even if it ...

Re: 289 High Performance Distributor
The more compression, the less vacuum advance contributes to improving fuel economy and overall light-throttle efficiency. The purpose of the vacuum advance is to raise cylinder pressure in those low-throttle situations. Beyond the Fords referenced, Chevy also had a centrifugal only on the 283 HP in...

Re: Just thinking out loud is all??
Homogeneous and stratified combustion are the primary considerations, I believe. The difference between a log burning and a block of C4 blowing up is how fast the combustion reaction occurs. It's really a matter of semantics whether we say gasoline is a controlled burn or dynamite is an explosion. Y...
