Re: chain auto parts stores vs internet sellers

As long as we’re discussing local suppliers, a few years back our shop ordered a pair of edelbrock heads. When they showed up, they had clearly been run on an engine. How hard is it for the shipper/receiver to open a box when something is returned, and what kind of asshat uses new parts then returns...

Re: 850 Brawler carb tuning

The bigger bleeds leaned the mixture, the way you describe it sounds like it’s lean so you could try .005” smaller bleeds than stock and try it. You could try tuning with the power valve, but I would plumb in a vacuum gauge and try it first. If you’re pulling 13” of vacuum in that “unhappy” area, a ...

Re: chain auto parts stores vs internet sellers

Local store pays local taxes, employs local people, etc. Internet store pays that person to sit in his parents basement in his underwear and drop ship parts from the manufacturer at minimal mark up. Then you have the Summits, etc. Buy from whoever you want, your choice. You might be surprised to fin...

Re: 434 engine upgrades ?

The intake isn’t the cork, FWIW we finished up a 427 recently with AFR 235’s, topped with an untouched 4150 version Motown intake the customer wanted to use, street engine. It made 618 (corrected) and peaked at around 6600 with a cam very close to yours. Get with a cam company to sell you a cam more...

Re: 423 SBC combo help

I’ve done the comparison between our 1 3/4 dyno headers and my personal (Doug’s) 1 7/8 chassis headers, both with 3 1/2 collectors on several 600 to 700 hp engines. The bigger headers: lose below 5300, pretty much overlay up to 6300, and gain from 5 to 15 numbers above 6300. There is nothing magical...

Why not just spray it? It will accomplish your goal without changing anything else.

Re: Cam overlap degrees for marine cam selection

What are you looking to accomplish with the different cam? Without any intended arrogance/malice, why do yo think your cam selection is an improvement over the untold research and development Mercury did on that engine?

Re: Am I on the Right Track; Budget Lightweight 289 SBF Short Block Build…

I’m amazed at how complicated a boring old small block Ford can become. A 331 with the cheapest of parts and reasonable heads will do the job here, it’s not like this is a Super Stock or Competition Eliminator short block. #-o

Re: Am I on the Right Track; Budget Lightweight 289 SBF Short Block Build…

Displacement rule class? I ask because I would much rather build a 331 internally balanced than a 289, where the torque coming out of the turns will far outweigh what a light 289 could do. I have a Scat superlight crank, good stuff but where it is light doesn’t have much influence since it’s relati...

Re: Low buck 350

I figured those heads with the small chambers should be better than smoggers, but alas no hard data to back it up. We don’t mess with much factory iron (heads) any more, but I promise for the most part they’re pretty disappointing on the dyno. Oh, and Speedmaster, those were worse than factory.

No bearing technology can make up for an uncovered oil pump pickup or aerated oil. Has this been addressed?

Re: 2.00” or 2.02” intake valve in a 351w D0OE head?

Unless you absolutely must use these heads, hang them on the wall as the ghost of horsepower past and move on. Even Edelbrock’s heads are a 400 hp choice with zero effort, why not hunt a used set of them down instead?

Re: Oil Pump Update?

So do all these pumps now use powder metal gears? Has PM proven to be a good substitute (or even an upgrade?) for billet gears? Also, if rebuilding my 327's original oil pump is a practical option, where can I have this service done? The engine has about 115K miles and I have no reason to think the...
