Re: cutting aluminum seat pocket
It depends on the setup and cutting tool. Th number of cutters is not a factor, only the diameter and force and rigidity and heat and what the cutter is made of. (just Chip load and heat and vibration) With a good spindle you could go 600 rpm, or actually 1000+ with coolant, or even 3x that with pcd...

Re: sintered bronze main bearings vs alum steel
Thank you. The pictures I am seeing are all a split tri-metal bearing, basically the same as used in most engines in mid 20th century. Unfortunately this type is not an easy thing to make from scratch or fix, and is not resizable. (once the top layer is worn away it's mostly done) I have never heard...

Re: sintered bronze main bearings vs alum steel
I'm not clear on what type of bearings we are discussing. Aluminum, bronze, steel, babbit? Split shell or full circle? Thrust faces or no? If you had a part number from a major bearing manufacturer we could look it up, and that might help, or not. Many things can be done, although, it depends what y...

Re: Chevy iron duke
I was imagining a forklift.
Is there emissions testing on forklifts? I don't think so.
Or, I hope not
But any way, I probably would not recommend that swap. It's not that hard to fix an isuzu with the right connections.

Re: When does custom porting become beneficial?
But one thing that does bother me is people don't understand how many different engines there are in the world. There is no way even with a full lifetime that one could know all the fine details of every cylinder head that currently exists. And they are all a little different, tho there are a lot of...

Re: When does custom porting become beneficial?
If you want to port old heads you probably need an old head guy.
This could be a good place to find that connection.
Porting can take an hour or week depending on what you want done to what.
I'm still unclear what the job is.

What's the deal with Atlas engine cylinder sleeves?
Customer brought in a 5 cylinder atlas engine and it appears........... to be an aluminum block with flanged iron cylinder sleeves. Really? I thought that concept was dead a generation ago. As far as i know, you design an engine this way and it works for a time.....but eventually the sleeves move ar...

Re: Switching From Head Bolts to Studs
The aluminum head expands more than the fastener with heat.
It gets tighter when hot.
Just because the low class 8.8 will hold at room temp does not mean it's good enough.
Clamping load bolt VS nut should be similar unless the head of the bolt or nut is much different size.

What can I do do with old parts catalogs?
Shop has been around since 60 years and in that time has collected a LOT of old catalogs.
Maybe 200 cubic feet worth
Sealed power, perfect circle, manley, clevite, FM, moog, pioneer, ect.
I'm afraid most of then are headed to the landfill
Is there anybody who scans and digitizes this old stuff?

Re: Anyone know what size this is?
Yeah, best to use hardened keys or something like that.
But DO buy the full set of female square sockets.
MANY uses
Put a KEY or square thread extractor in them and it's stronger than a solid tool, and can also drive taps
