Re: 423 SBC combo help

Are you running the standard AFR roller valve springs? They are around 200 pounds on the seat. I'd try and upgrade the valve springs to something in the 250 pounds on the seat area. Also check for pushrod interference. Look for wear patterns on the pushrods. They could be binding on the head or valv...

Re: No power out of ideas

I'm thinking valve springs at this point. Have you checked the seat pressure of your valve springs? Check your cam card but I'm guessing they are suppose to be around 160 or 180 pounds on the seat. If you upgrade to a mechanical roller even a small mechanical roller, then you could put 250 to 300 po...

Re: Older Brodix -10 SBC Spread Port Heads

Old Brodix heads can be good if they are not too beat up. Generally, I always tell people to not buy used heads. Many times you'll end up putting as much money into them replacing parts and fixing them as you would buying a new set. But hopefully you can get away with just a valve job and maybe clea...

Re: Head Porters: Eye health question

I tried everything and ended up giving up porting about 8 years ago because of the eye issue and because of chest pains. I found with the eye issue that I would rinse my eyes out everyday or more at the kitchen sink with the bubble water running on my eyes. Seemed to work good. I think the aluminum ...

Re: No power out of ideas

"Hard to start" makes me think it's some kind of electrical issue. Do you have enough ground wires? Is it making 14 volts when running? Is the battery old? Old batteries with a short can draw down the electrical system.

Re: No power out of ideas

Why is the ignition timing so conservative? Shouldn't it be more like 22 degrees initial, 36 degrees total? Especially at 6200 feet. What's the compression? What's the cam size? I think your timing was just too retarded.

Re: "L98 valve spacing"

If I remember correctly, the L98 valve spacing is 0/40. The intake valve is in the stock location, but the exhaust valve is moved over .040" to provide space for a larger intake valve.

Call up the person who had the carb before and ask him if he changed anything. Then reverse whatever he did.

Re: Pass-on 4 valve engine project

That's my point,I think the OEM's are making a mistake. I'm guessing five years from now electricity is going to be 2 or 3X more expensive while gasoline will be about the same or alittle higher (oil will probably be in the $50 to $80 a barrel range). Chevrolet was having trouble selling the Volt. I...

Re: Pass-on 4 valve engine project

The ICE car vs the electric car will come down to the price of electricity vs gasoline. As more people use electric cars and trucks, the price of electricity will go up and the price of gasoline will go down due to the reduction of demand for gasoline. This will have the effect of increasing or cont...

Re: Pass-on 4 valve engine project

I'm betting that about 3 or 4 years from now they'll be alot of electric cars and trucks sitting on dealers lots unsold. There may be a large market for electric cars and trucks, but I think the ICE market is and will be alot larger than people think and will take alot more time for ICE people to sw...

Re: Pass-on 4 valve engine project

I think the bigger issue is that I don't see big power numbers with the 4-valve setup. For all the effort and cost, there should be at least a 200 hp improvement over a conventional 2-valve setup. But when you look at the Mercury SB4, it's just rated at 750hp. A person could get the same or more wit...

Re: Pass-on 4 valve engine project

Looks like the head has some nice tall ports to it. Should flow really good. What do you think the cost would be to make a custom block to fit these heads? I would think it would be around $2 million or so. If head bolts and water ports are the only limitation, I'd think working with Dart and having...

Re: Pass-on 4 valve engine project

Do you have any CAD pictures of the finished head? How come you didn't make it fit a BBC block? Good luck up north. Is the company ICE related?
