Re: RPM...and it's overall effects on power to the tire ??
Wild...I think not...lol...not to your desired comfortablity zone, yes. I copy and pasted the exact statement where it was said...in green. And for what it's worth...maybe Kaase (his engine builder thinks it's "wild" also) should steer him staight. Hell, maybe he's leaving something on th...

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
So Jerminator are you going to try and stay connected to this forum when you are in Guatemala? It would be kind of neat to see a pic once in a while or to read about their use of CAD/CAM in the area, current racing tech, or their machining capability. Sorry for the thread drift...PM me if you like....

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
It was a technical master piece, I know there were many teething troubles, but I'm sure it never suffered from crank failure :!: I'm afraid I have to agree with ' SchmidtMotorWorks ' It can be done, but it requires A technical, engineering, & m'cing ability of the highest std. Not being nasty ,...

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
Sounds like a waste of time and money that could be put to better use. Since my wife and I decided to quit our jobs and move to Guatemala to volunteer with a non-profit for the foreseeable future, I have been accused of that quite a bit. I guess it just depends on what you consider a "be...

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
mmmm...getting fussy eh :!: Alright, how about you m/c all the pins with the type of material you want, the end of the pins are m/c 'd with locking tapers, and the crank wheels / webs also have the opposite accommodating taper. you can also lap the component tapers for a better fit / grip. there's ...

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
Couldn't you get to your performance goal with a lot more reliabilty and much less expense by turbo charging an existing engine? Absolutely! But what's the fun in that? I could get 500+hp out of a turbo Hayabusa motor that would end up being smaller and lighter than what I want to build. I'm not su...

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
Do you have experience doing this kind of machine work? I have made 100's of billet cranks and also have a lot of precision form surface grinding experience, and would not want to make a Hirth coupling. I have seen one at Daimler from a 1930s racing engine. Looks very fragile and the strength is li...

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
Notice how short the length of the rod pin is. True, that is a really short rod pin for the size. But what if I went to the Hirth coupling for the mains, then used 60mm mains with roller bearings? Surely that could add a lot of rigidity? Another Kiwi trick, would be to look for a 4 cyl crank with w...

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
Thin Indeed, this one caught my eye.
Isn't the flat-6 inherently better balanced than the 90 degree V8? That has to count for something.

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
Look at the thin counterweights on this Bugatti crank. See the pin overlap in the red circle? That is adding a lot of strength. At this point I think your design is ok because you have overlap. But I don't have the FEA or CAE to back that up. Now may be the time to start outsourcing that help. :win...

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
So I got a rod and piston in the mail yesterday, since $10 shipped on eBay was the cheapest way to get accurate measurements. Looking at the important dimensions (stolen from the 10k rpm v12 thread): Bore spacing- 3.23 Bore- 3.03 Compression height- .9 Rod width and clearance- .852, the rod bearings...

Re: What next ? 3 D sintered metal c / rods and pistons
What is the fatigue performance of sintered metal parts like? Probably not great. The local university (NC State) has at least one very expensive sintered metal 3D printer. I was talking to a guy who was part of their FSAE team, and apparently they were going to try to make some parts with it. I'll...

Then it's a good thing they're sintered metal...joe 90 wrote:Well, I can't see them ever getting a man onto the moon?
Conrods wouldn't last too long if they're plastic, nor would pistons last long.

Re: Designing and Building a Custom Crankshaft
Well the first thing anybody would ask is how much horse power? If you said 50 or 5,000 I would instantly have a feel for the size of the beast. The next, less subtle thing would be its efficiency. If you assume standard efficiency (BSFC of 0.5) and want 700 HP that is a bit different from a Formul...
