I would get the right retainers and/or right springs for the application. It could cause an issue because that inner spring will be floating in the middle spring. There is no step to make the inner spring work correctly or to match it's height.

I don't like using the + or - .050" locks. I would much rather use a different retainer. There are different retainers available to change installed height. As far as shims, there is no problem using them if they are used correctly. You should not put the shim under the spring itself. You shoul...

With larger diameter springs, it's pretty much a matter of preference. The 7 degree locks are used a lot in small diameter springs and beehive springs because the center of the retainer can be smaller to accommodate those springs. That's why the 7 degree is used on a lot of LS applications.
