Bronze guides/liners in "nailhead" Buicks
A customer has been told because of the unique rocker angles, the old Buicks can't use bronze guides or guide liners. Anyone have enough experience with these to comment?

Maybe time to increase our shop hourly
A NV shop just took in the assembly of a Studebaker Champion six-cylinder flathead and quoted the owner $185 hourly. We do these in our sleep and for half that rate. Maybe we've been asleep.

Year late and a dollar short, but I never knew the Dusenberg used quarter-speed cams. Now we know where Bus Schaller got his inspiration.

Re: Willys Flathead Idle Timing
Glad you found your way out of the woods.
Learn something every day. That 30 degrees of advance at idle may only be applicable to highly modified Willys six-cylinders w/EFI; I'd never have thought to try that much initial advance on a flathead.

How different were they from the Boss 302" Tunnel Port heads?

Re: Cooling tricks with iron headed hot rods?
Blocking the exhaust crossover... Hmmm... IF I am not mistaken, years ago in school they said that reduced combustion chamber temps to reduce NOX. But yes, that would indeed heat up the intake manifold. I am interested in hearing more about plugging this rather if I do it or not. What, the passage ...

Re: sintered bronze main bearings vs alum steel
FWIW, we deal in weird shite all the time. The pro tip is to get really deep into all the on-line and hard copy bearing dimension listings. Thus far, we've been able to find a "close enough" bearing, sometimes machining the bore to fit the OD of a bearing with the correct ID. On rod bearin...

Re: Cooling tricks with iron headed hot rods?
Back in another lifetime, I would fill the exhaust crossover passages with molten aluminum and then carefully port the exhaust end. Then, one time I didn't have time, so packed the crossover portion with scrungled aluminum tray and used a .0625" thick stainless steel shim at the intake gasket s...

Just scanning through Motor Trend and saw some numbnuts hot rod shop, their high dollar build featured two K&N open cone air filters on a y-pipe right behind the radiator.Walter R. On our obsolete iron heads: Block the exhaust heat crossover Large electric fan with shroud Outside cold air intake Fuel return line to the tank Custom ignition advance curve; lots of initial advance and plenty of vacuum advance at cruise. Tuning the carb with an on-board wide band O2 sensor. As lit...

Re: Willys Flathead Idle Timing
On a recent Engine Masters episode, Steve Brule gave up trying to tune a particular intake/carb/cam combination. He basically said, "I've spent hours just to make it less bad, but it will never be good." Is it possible your combination of cam overlap and the intake plenum design just don't...

Re: dynamic compression street cam ( cont...)
As previously stated, overlap has nothing to do with the theoretical dynamic compression or the actual cranking compression; the IVC, the intake closing point is what determines that. To get a better understanding of this, go to a cranking compression calculator. The same 10:1 static compression can...

Re: dynamic compression street cam ( cont...)
Good for what? In what application? Economy or max power? On what fuel? 200 is about as high as iron heads will tolerate, but again, depends upon the quench/squish and chamber design.said anything over 140psi good for a street car

Re: Willys Flathead Idle Timing
  At 4.0 lb/hr the engine quit. It is back at 5.5 lb/hr because that keeps the A/F between 16 and 18 (no sounds of detonation). MAP moved around from 57 to 52 KPa. EGTs are around 700 degress. Less smoke at the tailpipe but still smells rich. Should I be concerned about the lean A/...
