Re: dynamic compression street cam ( cont...)

As previously stated, overlap has nothing to do with the theoretical dynamic compression or the actual cranking compression; the IVC, the intake closing point is what determines that. To get a better understanding of this, go to a cranking compression calculator. The same 10:1 static compression can...

Re: dynamic compression street cam ( cont...)

said anything over 140psi good for a street car
Good for what? In what application? Economy or max power? On what fuel? 200 is about as high as iron heads will tolerate, but again, depends upon the quench/squish and chamber design.

Those who profit from that counterfeit crap are more numerous, larger and stronger than those who are harmed by it; ever thus.

Re: Willys Flathead Idle Timing

  At 4.0 lb/hr the engine quit. It is back at 5.5 lb/hr because that keeps the A/F between 16 and 18 (no sounds of detonation). MAP moved around from 57 to 52 KPa. EGTs are around 700 degress. Less smoke at the tailpipe but still smells rich. Should I be concerned about the lean A/...

In-Tech wrote: Wed Apr 10, 2024 12:49 pm You can leave the timing up, headers run cooler.
Yes, set the idle initial advance to the happy spot. However, that requires modifying the distributor centrifugal to limit the total. Flatheads do not like much total advance.

Re: Who here actually drives an EV/HYBRID?

when does the brake light turn on when driving in 'one pedal' mode? Basically any time the pedal is released sufficiently to slow the car; IIRC any time decel reaches .1g. Most EVs have at least two decel rates, some three and some four. The driver selects how sensitive he wants the one-pedal to op...

Re: Rod bearing clearance

Actually, with that probable 5.300" stroke, I would run minimum .040" rod side clearance and guide the rods side movement within the piston; (piston guided rods); similar to a 2-stroke. What diameter is the rod journal on that crank ? Walter, I'll never build one of those beasts, but have...

Re: Leftovers/junk 388 SBC

That's what a engine like that should make pretty easily. . . . I just find it odd that stuff that ran mediocre in 70s and 80s that guys think it will mysteriously run better in 2024. To give our OP some slack, doesn't seem he's claiming to have found any magic; he was just giving himself props for...

Re: Leftovers/junk 388 SBC

Even on junk- the labour kills me. For true. What our OP did is only cost-effective if shop labor is removed from the equation and/or if the customer has a sentimental attachment to the build so he's not shopping for lower-than-crate cost. What we now call junk I would have been thrilled to have in...

Re: SBC Valves - GMPP Vortec Heads

Going from 85g to 125g, that's a 50% increase in weight. Yeah, it's always about the cost, but I'd take a shift as a greeter at Walmart to afford the lighter valves.

Kudos, Mike. You and Ed went different ways in making cams, but a family-owned company is always my first choice to deal with. Thanks for hanging in there.

Re: Anyone been able to reach Isky Cams lately?

Many of us old school guys are "no phone number, no business. I also respect the business owners wishes, if they only communicate through e-mails, OK by me, I am still able to accomplish what I want to do with business owners who still have customer service and a phone number. I know the world...

Re: Narrowing rods?

I was curious what are the rules and guidelines for narrowing rods? I've narrowed the big end in my flywheel grinder. I have a small chuck that I use to grind Subaru buckets that I use to hold them. Then I use a valve seat grinder to chamfer the edges. (put the stone in the dresser and lift the rod...

Re: Anyone been able to reach Isky Cams lately?

Only slightly OT, but having an online presence in Studebaker and Packard V8 discussions and being listed as a vendor in club publications, I should have a separate phone number just for that. I get calls early mornings, late nights, weekends; all nice older guys who just have a question and don't n...

Yes, bike engines use them, but there's a helluva lot of difference in the leverage a 2.180" head has against the stem.
