Re: When does custom porting become beneficial?

I can see both sides of the coin here - For a effort to performance percentage porting period correct heads, intake will be a time/ cost lot of deal. I can see getting a genuine 450hp from a 327- 350 cube with stock parts not as easy as people think without spending money. Most small business owners ...

Re: 401 sbc ready for the Dyno

1.35 ft/ lbs and 1.46hp/ cube. Potentially at your weight 10.1s @ 130 mph ,something to work towards for sure. I have had water and oil around 150 - 155 f on dyno as it takes some time to get heat . Normally for me at the track it's an hour between runs or longer so getting oil temp up is difficult ...

Re: Inexpensive 350 Build

Front wheel bearing adjustment on disc brakes plays a role for pad drag.
Drum brakes not so much.
As bird said, good quality flex lines.

Re: Inexpensive 350 Build

It's not that good, but better than Dave's 69 by far. It has factory front discs, I'd like to figure out how to anti drag them, anyone? Good question, and on my list. Just remember 305 stockers have gone 10.60, do we want a 305 stocker out running us? No I don't, we will be working on it. I have go...

Re: 401 sbc ready for the Dyno

You got a spacer under the carb? They can help drop intake vac. But at 2" it definitely wants a bigger carb. 3" collectors are a definite. Looking real good so far! I wouldn't bother dialling in that carb, go for the biggest you got & dial that in, but do collector extensions 1st, the...

Overlay with and without drop base.
A bit rich without 0.86 Lambda
0.91 Lambda with drop base no other changes.
Have not used drop base at track yet.

Re: 401 sbc ready for the Dyno

I've seen where Big Joe and others have always had power losses with the extreme lid but also saw where power masters I think found that also and taped up the round filter and pulled only thru the lid and power picked right back up to match dyno's airflow hat alone. They theorized both this and the...

Re: 401 sbc ready for the Dyno

Just a reminder that I am not been critical towards Jamie (OP) or his combination, just throwing my thoughts out there for guys to consider for there own engine combos and application. All my own 383 stuff is small cam / induction tract deals as well that only turn 7500rpm. I calculated the curtain ...

Re: 401 sbc ready for the Dyno

I know on those twisted wedge heads the pinch is tight with minimal pushrod clearance so without extensive amount of work not alot you can do. Something to consider. A 2.02 " valve @ 90% throat has a area of 2.50" with stem removed. If you have 2.0" at the pinch there is a lot variati...

Re: 401 sbc ready for the Dyno

I always test my cylinder head at the highest depression possible on my bench with and without intake manifold. The reason why is I calculate piston demand at max piston speed at around 76 deg ATDC . For a 401 cubes at 6000rpm it is asking for 294 cfm. Alot of intake manifolds need runner work and t...

Re: 401 sbc ready for the Dyno

A couple of easy equations for MCSA @ 6000rpm using 0.55 - 0.61 mach. 4.125 x 4.125 x 3.75 x 6000rpm X 0.00353 = 1351/613 (0.55 mach) = 2.20" MCSA 1351/690 (0.61mach) = 1.95" MCSA. Peak hp rpm will determine what speed the port can handle at the pinch. If the peak hp number is lower than 6...

Re: 401 sbc ready for the Dyno

I think 1.30 - 1.35 ft lbs per cube is achievable and I agree peak torque around 5000rpm. I also think 560hp,the problem will be torque will fall of fast above peak,as mentioned small valve and MCSA and average CSA for the cubes. With the hp equation you need a certain amount of torque to make peak ...

Buy a couple of different brands, cut open and look inside.
Most are made in China now anyway
