Re: Aftermarket BBM head

What compression will this motor have?
If where talking flat out drag strip usage with over a 14.5 compression you can run a 1.60” exh valve if the port will flow over 250 cfm and make well north of 750 hp !

Re: Aftermarket BBM head

Your looking at the ratio of just the valves themselves and not the overall flow ratio. When I step up from a 1.74” stock Mopar valve to a 1.81” valve in terms of a iron head it’s because when you max port out the head to get high lift flow numbers that should be had thru a 1.74” valve you drop off ...

Re: piston compression height question

My 1986 TRW catalog states that a L3020F piston is a cast replaced for a Forged L2165F piston which has a 1.671” compression height.

From what I have seen over the years the stated compression height could be plus or minus .005” from what the catalog states!

Re: Venturi effect valve seat area

1.63 hp per cid tells us nothing without knowing the overall CID here and the max rpm!

Modern day Diesel electric locomotives with 16 cylinders and 710 cid per cylinder output 6000 hp, but they only spin up to 950 rpm for example!

Re: Head work?

Even just sitting in the port Little by little it will remove material. The problem then is it will remove material everywhere and that means where you don’t want that to take place! There’s a specific basic geometric shape to every port ( even the ones that don’t flow well) and just removing materi...

Re: Venturi effect valve seat area

Flow bench test of tulip over nail head exh valves will always show a low lift flow gain and in fact a big low lift flow gain if the valve bowl is deep enough, but a number of times I have not seen that translate into a performance gain. Are you shrinking the exh valve to facilitate using a bigger i...

The EDM hole lifters are the only way to go with solids!

Re: Iron BBC Head Question

With a port volume of that size ( 365 CCs ) I assume we are talking about a motor that’s over 550 cid that needs 480 to 500 cfm?

Re: Reuse ARP Rod Bolts?

X2.
If the filter looks clean don’t bother pulling the rod caps!
If you just can’t help yourself then pull the rear main to check the thrust and the front main which gets its oil feed after every other main has.
If that looks iffy then it’s pull the rods time!

Re: How much swirl is too much swirl

A parallel valve wedge chamber head like a PONTIAC ( and many others ) can not be compared to a true Hemi type head in the least! All heads that produce some level of swirl will do so in two steps . The first being where the air mass traveling through the port is taking the path of least resistance ...

Re: Erratic Idle - Could it be the Distributor

I would rule out timing advance creep by removing the advance springs and replacing them with small cable tie's or mechanics wire to lock out the timing.
Light silver springs that come in most recurve kits give up the ghost fast and are even effected by engine temp!

The darn 882s are the first castings with hardened seats and are prone to cracking, so I would not lean on them too hard!

Re: How much HP can this head support?

So you say they are mildly ported and attaining 294 cfm up from the stock 240 or so?
At what lift is the 294 cfm coming in at?
Is it in the range of the lift of either of those two Cams you have?
