Re: Quality engine components vs COST

In use premium parts. Johnson Lifters, Oliver or Molnar rods depending on engine build. I or H beam. America made highly preferred. I believe ISKY and HOWARD grinds there own cam lines. Not sure though. Bullet will grind a custom cam as will a few others but I'm not sure who can deliver any more. Ca...

Re: Lunatic bootlegger cams

Could be a CAMSHAFT MACHINE CO, EPC ENNGINE POWER COMPONENTS, or WAVER MARTEL CAM CO. camshaft. One of these company's grinds most of the off the shelf cams regardless of what company you might think your buying from. Almost all non roller cams are CWC castings.

Re: 850-16 Comp Hyd Roller Lifters ticking SHP/SBC

Comp sells Generic lifters. I use Johnson lifters in my LS builds but there is no reason we are seeing these quality issues like we do. Its all marketing junk. They put their name on it and we buy it.

Quality engine components vs COST

Without getting into name calling etc. The cost of engine components today is the highest ever and the quality is going down. Crank snouts bent 4 degrees 8 degrees of runout, H beam rods with over .001 taper on the main bearing surface, and Cams/lifter wear issues. These are not cheap parts and the ...

Re: Chevy / GM's First Race Blocks

When Zora cast the Can Am blocks for Jim Hall. I think the ZL-1 was 1969-70 so shortly after that. Maskin, St.Denis and Mitchel changed all that.

Re: SCAT 9000 Limits

The limits of a 9000 series SCAT crank? You probably could not afford to build that monster. Good cranks don't break. Fuel cars replace them before they develop cracks. A well balanced assembly, that stays out of detonation will run like hell forever. There are cast LS cranks making over 1000HP for ...

Re: Cast steel

Take a look at the EMD 567 and 645 prime movers. I think you mean the 710 casting. The 567 and 645 are normalized weldments. Adding 1" in stroke to the 645 got us the fuel efficiency we needed to compete with GE. We gave up that 1" with the port window used in the 2 event / cycle engine. ...

Re: ProFiler_Raylar_8.1_BBC LS type Heads

Beautiful head work. I really like this design head. What I would like to see is a flow bench that could come close to what a port flows on a running engine at 7500 RPM instead of at a static state that really means nothing. Well not nothing, just keep making the port bigger.

Re: In cylinder vacuum measurements ?

Scientifically there is no such thing as a vacuum. Only less than atmospheric pressure. If you ever pull a vacuum, you would have nuclear fusion.

Re: High nickel blocks? Vortec heads??

Throughout the universe is Iron. Guess what other mineral is always mixed in with it. Correct, Nickel. Every meteor has this mix. So it is very common that both minerals are always present. GMs 010/020 numbers on blocks really hold very little value. The Ohio foundry and machining center in Flint Mi...

Re: High nickel blocks? Vortec heads??

There is only one reason Chevrolet would intentionally add nickel to and iron block casting. Machining cost. Either the tool time or tool cost. As far a better casting for the customer. Dream on. The GM foundry in Defiance Ohio is not going add a cost for any reason without some serious cost saving ...

The rods had no discoloration, so they weren't starved for oil. Thousands of little pieces. They exploded. Much we don't know.

Don't care what your mechanical compression is. Check the cranking PSI.
