Re: special bolts

Have you tried Bel Metric? That's all they do, is metric fasteners.

Re: Options for 1920's engine design refurbish.

trying to re-use the old pistons is a no-go. All of them have cracks in the crowns, one of them the crown just fell out when we got it out of the bore. Cylinder 1 was completely ruined-split in the lower third of the sleeve, below the water jacket and into a normally sealed void. I sleeved it, but t...

Re: Options for 1920's engine design refurbish.

Dave, That particular plan is already in motion, we're on the acetone-ATF penetrant mix stage. A few sharp raps with a wood block and a mallet every afternoon before going home from work, and a fresh mix of acetone/atf, then sits for another 24 hours. I'm on day 3 with the penetrant, it had oil in t...

Re: Options for 1920's engine design refurbish.

is that the imprint of the head gasket, or are the cylinders already sleeved? Some Briggs and stratton engines have a 2.000" Ø bore. Honda CB 150 Bore : 52 mm 2.047" Honda CB 160 Bore : 50 mm 1.968" I'm thinking those modern aluminum pistons may have a smaller wristpin - solved with ...

Re: Options for 1920's engine design refurbish.

The pistons are a very odd/old design, compared to anything current. I'll get some photos as soon as I get them out of the block. I would doubt they are barreled very much, as they are a 4" tall piston in a 2" diameter bore, with rings above and below the wrist pin. I also don't know of an...

Re: Valve Guide Clearance

I think you're right Bill. I've found some guides from a Jaguar that are the correct length, OD, and are a .312" ID, but I'd rather be around .309 when they go in so I can ream and hone or just hone, if they're close. I might just buy some bar and make some. They're not difficult, any machinis...

Re: Valve Guide Clearance

They're LS 862 truck heads, the guides and seats both will need to be removed and refitted due to a LOT of welding being done. The press fits will be significantly distorted after welding and straightening. Once new seats and guides go in, titanium intakes and stainless exhaust valves will be fitted...

Valve Guide Clearance

Looking at fitting Bronze guides in an aluminum head. It needs to be done, however the guides available are what I would consider to be "at the limit" as-delivered. The valve stem is 0.310" diameter, and the guides, as delivered, before installing, are 0.313" diameter as per the ...

Re: Selecting Valve Seat material for Ti Valves

No coating on the head, just a moly coated stem. There were valve float issues, as the retainers show a bit of rubbing on the inner spring seat. The valves were run for 180 laps on Sunday, October 20, 2002 at Memphis Motorsports Park, in car #25, driven by Bobby Hamilton Jr. He started in position 3...

Re: Selecting Valve Seat material for Ti Valves

Well-They're here! The stems mic out showing absolutely no wear, which is good after 296 miles of run time. The valve seats are roughed up pretty bad though on all but two valves. These retainers are huge compared to LS retainers, by the time I cut away the large OD to get them down to size (the inn...

Re: Selecting Valve Seat material for Ti Valves

I am not sold on the need for bronze seats just yet, at least for the intake valve. Even GM is running coated Ti intakes on powder metal seats, I just need to get Durabond to actually pick up a phone. (Or Del-West, or Victory...No one answers a phone anymore!) Hopefully I'll be able to put a few tho...

Re: Selecting Valve Seat material for Ti Valves

Have you verified they will recoat used parts? Yes, they will after they have been machined. They will not remove the coating, you must do that yourself and verify that the parts will be within tolerance. I have *heard* that ductile iron seats are OK for Ti intake valves, provided they are coated c...
