I can't imagine why you would need to re-nitride the crank only taking a thou off. Seems ridiculous.

Maybe the bearing companies recommend only using certain halves in certain locations so you'll waste more bearing/thus they sell more. Just a thought. I regularly use them both ways w/o issue.

I have brazed the floors of the BBC heads up. Makes for big improvement. You can make a lot of power with the rectangle port heads w/o moving valves around. What is making you want to try something else in the first place? On high RPM big blocks with iron heads, detonation can be a problem. In truck pull applications I've used many Autolite AR132s and AR133s. Does anyone have any recommendations other than NGK? I'm not an NGK fan but may have to try them a while if know one has any better recommendations.

FYI, in Central and Southern MO the competitive SS big blocks horsepower peak in mid 7s and higher with OEM iron intakes, Fords generally a little higher than Chevy. the marine version uses a forged piston by JE. They use an unconventional ring package but they seem to last as long as the stupid rod don't break #-o I've rebuilt a lot of these marine 8.1s both Volvo and Mercruiser and never seen a forged piston in one yet. Now all the 502s have JE forged pistons.

I have used them in iron CJ heads and also GM 990 heads. May have lost one after 5 years of very hard use truck pulling, not sure if it was the seat or the exhaust valve that let go first.
