Re: Clover Lapping Compound
"non-embedding compound" The late great Gordon Jennings mentioned that in some of his tech articles. I figured that was having fun with the new guys, like a left handed monkey wrench, bucket of steam, gasket stretcher, snipe hunt, etc. I think any abrasive will embed in aluminum or copper, maybe a l...

In Chevy's 1958 SAE paper about the new 9.5 to 1, 4 bbl 348 passenger car engine they showed the best ignition timing for the 348 vs some 283 engine up to 4500 rpm or so.

Like this ? https://www.vintage-mustang.com/attachments/img_1314-jpg.742198/ TRW's race pistons had a carefully contoured wavy skirt profile back in the 70s. I thought it made sense for for scuff resistance, providing plenty of lubrication and at lest theoretically more likelihood for hydrodynamic l...

For my money Getting the absolute most out of every fastener is not time or money well spent. Not every application requires torque-to-yield. My boss said last week that the (aluminum) torx fasteners that hold on his BMW's oil pan are torque to yield. In my head I said WTF!!!! . For decades HoloKrom...

"back to back to back" The re-test of the baseline condition is usually hard to come by. Time, expense, excitement over some positive improvements. But, but really adds some to the confidence in all the test the results. Some Standards have requirements to test repeatability and record the results a...

As others said, in the olden days the total R & P assembly weight or the con rod total weight potentially hide some pretty big differences is recip and rotating weight.

I wonder if an aluminum filled epoxy would have a better matched thermal expansion rate.

Re: SBC - main bearing clearance question
To me " no oil pressure " means zero psi. Was the shop's "no oil pressure" when priming at room temperature? Or at the first start up at room temperature. I don't believe An extra .0005" of rod and main bearing clearance by itself would change the running oil pressure by even 1 psi on a typical iron...

Re: Does quench affect power?
US OEM tricks/designs to reduce emissions in the early days were often aimed at reducing unburned hydrocarbons. Wide open piston to head clearance and even beveled piston domes supposedly reduced nooks and crannies available for hydrocarbons to hide in and avoid burning. https://cdn11.bigcommerce.co...
