Chassis Dyno Question (what HP formula in data acquisition)
Hey I got an email question that I'm not sure how to answer; I am trying to create my own dyno. I have the roller set and I am able to get RPM and time stamp from roller set to my PC. But I do not know which formula I have to use Torque and HP calculation. Could you please help me I told this man th...

Re: Is BSFC accurate when dyno testing?
I can see how BSFC could be accurately measured at a steady RPM, but when sweep testing it seems that there is a timing difference between what the fuel meter is measuring and what the engine is consuming. I suppose if the fuel bowl level is exactly stable across the dyno pull then the fuel passed ...

Re: GM on zinc in motor oil
One cool thing about a Frantz filter is that it is easy check for debris (like metal) on the top of the element every time you changed it. My brother bought a new Dodge pickup in the late 80s. He put a Frantz on it, used Amsoil, and never chaged the oil for around 60,000 miles. He changed the Frantz...

Re: GM on zinc in motor oil
Kevin, I've heard of toilet paper oil filters, but have never seen one or known anybody that had real experience using it. I have a problem with it because I just can't see how it would allow enough oil to go through the toilet paper fast enough to be able to lube the engine?? I figure that it has ...

Re: Setting Bearings Clearances the most accurate way
Use a dial indicator. Install crank with bearings in 1 and 5, torque caps, put the dial indicator on the crank by each and lift up and down, that's the real operating clearance. Repeat for the other mains. You can check rod bearing clearances both inline with the rod and across the parting line. Wor...

Re: crankshaft weight and HP
If you make three pulls in a row on that trackmaster with no changes how close are the numbers? Mine is not a Trackmaster, it has the Stuska DAQ. It can measure the effect of .005 lash on intake valves from one pull to the next. For that reason I don't do multiple pulls per change very often. If yo...

Re: crankshaft weight and HP
greasyc, that's what I mean. people are talking hp difference from a 45lb crank vs 48lb crank etc but that doesn't tell the story. If you have 2 48lb cranks of the same part number, that have the same MOI, and you drill the rod journals on one, and rifle drill the mains, but not the rods journals o...

Re: crankshaft weight and HP
Upsweep numbers with no inertia correction will be less than steady state numbers, downsweep numbers with no inertia correction will be higher than steady state numbers. If you make three pulls in a row on that trackmaster with no changes how close are the numbers? Mine is not a Trackmaster, it has...

Re: crankshaft weight and HP
Doing both an up sweep and down sweep without inertia correction will clearly show the effects of inertia. The upsweep numbers will be much lower than the downsweep numbers. Anyone with a Superflow can do it, but how many do? I did it years ago, just to learn about how inertia affects sweep tests. T...

Re: crankshaft weight and HP
I'm not sure what you are asking but lighter assemblies absorb and expend less less hp spinning up or down in RPM. Comparing both down and up sweeps without inertia correction will clearly show how inertia effects hp. "How much difference in HP would a 41 lb crank make vs. a 43 lb crank?" ...

Re: crankshaft weight and HP
Lighter rotating weight will require less inertia correction. The engine tells you what it wants for inertia correction. The amount inertia correction is a function of the factor you set and RPM rate of change. If you are doing steady state tests there will be no inertia correction even if you have ...
