Re: Can a steel flywheel be machined?

I'm still sitting on this waiting to see what I'm going to do as far as clutch is concerned. So to those that grind on a dedicated machine, how do you machine the step afterwards? Do you take it out of the grinder and into the lathe to cut the peripheral step? You must be indicating off the newly ma...

Re: Can a steel flywheel be machined?

So would it be better taking a skim cut with a carbide bit on a head resurfacing machine than on a lathe? The local guy has a new cnc rottler head skimmer. The step I can cut on the lathe. What about grain direction if done on a head skimmer though?

Can a steel flywheel be machined?

I've got a rather expensive steel flywheel for a subaru turbo that I want to re use. it's got the usual concave wear pattern to it as well as heat spots. Is it possible to turn it flat in a lathe then use a rotating stone to finish? I dont have a dedicated flywheel grinder in my area. I'll obviously...

Harmonic balancer's and Subaru flat 4's

What are peoples opinions on replacing the heavy factory front pulley with a lighter weight , smaller billet aluminium unit? Flat 4's are supposed to be inherently balanced, but this is different to frequency vibrations caused at certain rpm/load. Could a solid, lighter pulley destroy bearings on a ...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

Well, I made it to the test machine. Remember the car is right hand drive. It's the left that's been locking up. Results below. It seems theres a 4% imbalance at the front and 6% in the rear. The operator said its perfectly normal. Looking at the shock absorber results I think the imbalance is too g...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

I'm confident the X1-9 has an inherent propensity towards uneven locking at the front, as recounted in my earlier posting. Therefore it may be more a matter of what efforts have already been made in attempting to mitigate this, and whether or not they were helpful. The x1/9 uses the same calipers a...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

Residual pressure valve huh? Interesting. If it is, why would it cause a lock up on that side though? It happens in all circumstances when brakes are applied hard. Unfortunately I need to pull the carbies and manifold off to get to it. Pain in the butt right now. When I do I'd be very keen to see. L...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

I thought it was a joiner.....but now you all have me thinking otherwise. It's basically a hex nut shape. No further markings or complications.
Gotta pull half the car apart to get to it.
Car is oem with 4 wheel discs.

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

I followed the hard line coming from the side that has the tendency to lock up and found this.... looks like some sort of joiner maybe? Could this be the issue I wonder now. That caliper does bleed nicely though,

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

I think it has to be a hyd problem.....or some type of binding within the caliper/disc. Do not see how weight distribution can be the problem because the brake heat comes from the friction of the pads/disc. That friction comes from the hyd pressure in the system & should be the same side-to-side if...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

I'm baffled why the lighter side front runs hotter without ballast though. I cant get my head around that one. We have encountered a similar problem on occasion. The problem was found to be a dragging brake pad due to the use of a circular cross section caliper piston O ring. Unlike a square sectio...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

Dual reservoir mstr cyl? Is the front wheels feed line from mstr cyl teed to each wheel equal in length lines and hoses? Dual reservoir on drivers side. Hard line to within a foot of the caliper then flexi line. Obviously drivers side is a shorter run....longer run to the passenger side that locks ...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

Take the car out to a smooth asphalt road. Apply the brakes sufficiently hard to lock up all four corners. Now inspect the skid marks. Which corner locked up first, second, etc, can be determined by the locations of the skid marks. Braking force is determined by hydraulic pressure acting on the cal...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

Calipers are a spare set that I rebuilt so definitely not them, as it was doing it before with the old calipers and now with these. Would the dynamic weight transfer issue cause a hot disk though? There is a local garage that has a type of rolling road to check brakes . I'll see if I can get it ther...

Re: One wheel always locking before the other

The pressure sensor is an idea I thought of, but need to find one. I'm sure they are pretty even though, having checked with wheels in the air, brakes applied to various degree and a torque wrench on wheels. The corner weighting I didnt think about. I know for a fact there is a 3/4 inch spacer under...
