If you don't have a good used one to rework, the Moroso 22101 is what I'd recommend.
If you go with a Melling, remove the bypass valve and make sure it's free. They have a history of the bypass sticking when new.

Re: 400 SBC Piston Ht. Quench
Simply decking the block to get the quench to a happier place will take .035, seems like a lot to take off. No? Not really. Other than a bit of futzing with the intake, it's not a big deal. The intake likely needs to be checked and/or cut, anyway, no? Plus, then you know the decks are straight. Not...

Why not simply deck the block?

Re: Solid roller lifters in SBC hydr.roller block
The reason why they make the +.300" lifters, is because the std lifters wouldn't work in the later blocks, without modifications. We only sell the +.300" lifters now, no matter what block. Thanks, Mike. That was my take on it but wanted to make sure. I'll pass this info along to him, with...

Re: Solid roller lifters in SBC hydr.roller block
Thanks for the replies. A pal has got this going together and I'm doing a little leg work for him.
Let me ask this: Are there solid rollers for the early blocks that can be used in these later tall lifter boss blocks with no tie bar issues?

Solid roller lifters in SBC hydr.roller block
Late model SBC block designed for factory hydraulic rollers, getting a solid roller cam (bracket race deal, low .600 lift). With the .300 taller lifter bosses for the original factory roller/spider setup, what are some good options for solid roller lifters that won't run into tie bar interference or...

Re: 427 Build And Drag Test
Yes, right now my air T has a ring on it for testing 4150 carbs. I don't bother to set the date on my dyno, it has a default setting. Maybe I can take a picture of my Turbine setup and post. Hers a picture you can see the ring on the bottom of the turbine. One other thing I'd like to point out to Y...

Re: 427 Build And Drag Test
Have you ever run a QJet with your air bonnet on?
The 2006 date on the dyno sheet is interesting.

Re: Which of these two BBC intake would you run and why
Both good choices. The Weiand is such a close copy of the 163 that's it's a coin toss.
I'm doubtful you'd tell any difference.... short of being on a dyno.

Re: Piston to Head Clearance Minimum
I've run as close as .028 with my flat top drag race SBC stuff with no issues to 7300-7400. I'm more comfortable at .030 and anything over .032 is costing you power and torque with the small chamber 461-462-041-291-186 heads. At .034 and more, it's like leaving free money at the table. Assuming stee...

Re: 327 Build
If it was mine, I'd keep the head gasket bore much tighter (think Cometic gaskets  ), stay away from a hydraulic roller cam (use a solid roller with as much lift as the valve reliefs allow) and for sure use the Z28 intake....the L79's are not that great. Really, about the only way to muddy up ...

Re: 702 heads on a low RPM 496?
This was a pretty popular deal back in the day when 454's were the engine of choice for race car haulers. And it still works today. The 702 heads on a 454 (or bigger), a decent set of flat top pistons, a nice little hydraulic cam with the Performer intake and a decent carb will give tons of torque a...
