Re: Flat tappet cams and zinc

Once upon a time, I was asked to investigate what surface finish a flat tappet should have; rough or polished. I tried both. The rough surface tappet wore to a smooth finish. The mirror polished tappet surface became rougher with use. They wound up with nearly the same surface finish. The "slippery...

Re: Flat tappet cams and zinc

If the lifter is spinning and well lubricated, should the crown ware off? It does at some point in its life. I have raced a flat tappet cam in a boat and we tried a different oil every season and inspected cam and lifters At year 3 I tried royal purple HPS oil and it pitted and flatten most of lobe...

Re: Question for those who build and sell engines

You have to be far sighted enough to refuse some work from those you recognize as IDIOTS. I realized this some 30 years ago when I built an engine for a guy to put in his Corvette. He insisted upon a hi-volume oil pump. On a cold day during the Winter, he started his car in his garage to get it war...

Re: 47.5 rule for flat tappet camshafts

Isky claims that the Comp XE cams violate the 47.5% rule. The 47.5% rule applies to flat tappet cams for SBCs with 1.5 rockers but the concept is still the same for other configurations where the designs are "on the edge" or "over the edge" for lobe intensity. For 1.5 ratio SBCs, the duration at .5...

Re: New Holley 80577 950HP Supercharger carb question

This ^^ or connect a hose from the external PV nipple in the main body to the nipple in the base under the primary float bowl. The nipple below the bowl is hot manifold vacuum below the throttle. The PV will function as in a normal carb when the two nipples are connected. Tuner When converting a si...

Re: New Holley 80577 950HP Supercharger carb question

to simply change back to a non boost referenced mode, plug the external boost fittings and open a vacuum port from the power valve cavity through the baseplate so it sees full manifold vacuum. This ^^ or connect a hose from the external PV nipple in the main body to the nipple in the base under the...

Re: Dart BBC CNC 380's

Another zombie thread! Since I was the OP, thought I'd state the finished version on this build. Ended up getting 452 cfm at .900 and eliminated the stagnated areas of flow. The engine made 1084hp. Not quite the 1100 hp goal but the customer seemed happy. Did you go to a 2.350” valve and a steeper ...

Re: Is it normal for a sbc to want over 40 degrees timing?

What makes you think that jetting on the dyno is always perfect once in the car? Under hood air temperature, different headers amd exhaust, inertia, etc all affect fuel requirements. Bingo! we have a winner here. When you do dyno racing sometimes you go to the track and get a bad surprise. You’re d...

Re: Brad Penn vs D-A PennGrade 1 oil

I think I read something about the lubrizol add pack that was in the older bradpenn oil from ARG was discontinued.. Not sure if it was out dated or superceeded to a better add pack These details would be just as interesting as to what and where DA are getting their base oils. Is there another Pennsy...
