Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

So, the idea would be to give a preference to the area around the intake valve and between the valve and cylinder. If we look at the picture in which metal was added to the head, we see that they did not add extra metal to the path between the intake valve and cylinder. Flat_head_with_added_metal.pn...

Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

27:29 Design for combustion chambers ... is a secret. I just hope that some day they would reveal their secret combustion chamber design. One more thought: The well known fact of L-heads is that the gas mix arrives into the combustion chamber, does a tight 90 degrees turn, flows towards the cylinde...

Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

I am still talking about the alternate combustion processes which resemble very much Diesel, and no throttle control is used. One possibility would be SVPC (single valve per cylinder) in which there is only one poppet valve per each cylinder, opening to a nice round combustion chamber. There swirl ...

27:29 Design for combustion chambers ... is a secret. I just hope that some day they would reveal their secret combustion chamber design. I was thinking: Someone dare to ask? It seems like we are slowly entering an age of battery-operated electric cars. Car industry does not look like probable thie...

Is it possible to save weight by using hydropneumatic instead of coil springs?

Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

Here is what I've pondered once or twice. Ive never laid hands on a flat head, however I have wondered with the exhaust ports exiting through between the cylinders would it be possible to machine ports like a two stroke diesel through the cylinder wall into the existing port, obviously blanking the...

Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

I was thinking: What if someone wanted to convert a flathead engine into Atkinson cycle or Miller cycle, how would that work? Perhaps Atkinson cycle would not be desirable, because in that case there would be the need to make the combustion chamber even smaller, which is already difficult task with ...

Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

I was thinking: Which method they used to find the optimal shape? Did they accelerate the process by computer simulation or did they use a flow bench?

Re: Every electric vehicle has a chance of blowing up spectacularly

Think about an electrochemical battery as an energy storage that resembles explosives or gunpowder in principle: They do not require any oxidiser to release all chemical energy. That is a fundamental difference between a full battery and full fuel tank.

Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

They chose flat-top pistons. No dome or any other pop-up style. Probably you noticed also what they did to the heads. They added metal above pistons, and also some metal to make combustion chambers smaller. It is much easier to squeeze air out of the thin space between a piston and a head if both su...

Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

By the way, did you notice that the V8 had conventional looking carburetors, spark plugs, etc. No variable valve timing, turbulent jet ignition, or anything like that. That originally 95 hp flathead engine produced almost 250 hp and is still pretty much an example of conventional engine technology. ...

Re: Pondering about flathead potentials

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJWtjChXbOw Nice documentary. What did they do? 3:10 Cut off the top of the engine and totally rework both intake and exhaust ports. 3:17 Intake ports became exhaust ports and vice versa. Exhaust exit top of the block through custom headers. 3:44 Add plates that rerou...

It would be interesting to see a flathead engine with plasma ignition.
