Re: dry sump tank question

Warp Speed said " The scavenge stages are VERY sensative to restrictions on the return side!" Most common scavenger pumps are positive displacement gear type pumps and I know that the scavenger sections are pumping a mixture of air and oil back to the oil tank but what is the cause of the ...

Re: Sbc oil pump problem / noise

You may have a case of the gear tip bottoming against the root of the mating gear. Check the gear OD and also the root diameter then check that against the center distance of the two gear shafts. It would be entirely possible that one of the gear does not have sufficient root clearance.

Re: oil cooler affecting oil pressure. need advice.

The 1/2 inch lines should be more than adequate for a standard oil pump, if you have a HV pump you may want to go with -10 lines and fittings. The reason that your pressure is low before the oil warms up is that the oil viscosity is high and the and the resistance through the cooler is proportion to...

Re: Rod Big End Distortion From 8340 to ARP2000

It is not the bolts, whether you uses the 8340 bolts or the ARP2000 bolts the amount of stretch sets the clamping pressure. When you go from a stretch of .0055 to .0070 you have increased the clamping of the rod cap to the rod by 27%, and remember that steel will compress just like it will stretch s...

Re: electric water pump?

When Yamaha first released the TZ750 (it was the TZ700 originally) it had an over heating problem, their fix? They sent every one a new set of drive gears for the water pump to spin it faster and make more flow, problem solved! High "turbulent" water velocity through the engine and the rad...

Re: electric water pump?

Im running a Davies Craig EWP amp draw is less than 5amps (rated 10amp) and Im planning to run it without a fuse with a light on the dash. As for flow its 155l/min, which could prove too much as water doesn't spend a lot of time in the radiator being cooled. Not sure if it was a good idea to be hon...

Re: Air box design

Jacksoni, Regarding our external air inlet other than absolutely destroying any air flow over the right fender it doesn't do anything to assist air flow into the inlet system. My suggestion would be an inlet with a nice radiused leading edge mounted such that it would extend about an inch in front o...

Re: Air box design

jacksoni, An air inlet/plenum for the mile has different requirements than one for Bonneville, mostly centered around the size of the inlet. With your intercooler you are pretty much limited to an inlet size of 3.5 inch dia which is probably not bad for a Bonneville set up but may prove to be to sma...

Re: Air box design

Jacksoni, I would be very interested in your intercooler design. Intercooler efficiency is very dependent on the velocity of both the cooling fluid, cold water in your case, and also the velocity of the fluid to be cooled, inlet air. Typically what happens it that the area of the core on the air sid...

Re: Header material choice

If you are turboing the engine then 321 stainless is the preferred way, but you need to TIG them together and back shielding with argon is a requirement you can also use Solar Flux which is somewhat a PIA but works well. If the engine is normally aspirated then mild steel with aluminum coating insid...

Sparksalot,
Sounds like we are about the same vintage, I left school exactly 50 years ago and I probably took thermo around 1964-5.

Re: Electric motor vs. Gas engine

Standard electric motors are between 88-92% efficient based upon measuring the power out put/power input. Power in is amperes x voltage =Watts (746 watts = 1 hp) . Internal combustion engines are typically 30-40% efficient if you measure the efficiency on the amount of energy in the fuel/amount of e...

Re: Electric motor vs. Gas engine

One thing to remember about an electric motor is that its horse power rating is a function temperature, the motor is given a certain amount of voltage and amperage and when it reaches its rated temperature , while under load, that is its' horse power rating. Most electric motors can provide several ...

Doesn't really matter, either one will make a huge hole in the block when they break, and when it does just remember how much money you "saved" by buying ChiCom junk.
