Re: Vr1 for breaking in a cam?

As mentioned, it is not as good as a regular break-in oil. But if this has stock springs on it, I would not worry just use some additive and the VR1. Main thing is that the engine starts and runs first time you crank it up. Most cams are wiped out when they have problems getting the engine to fire u...

Re: Intake Manifold Porting Show ‘n Tell

For years I used air powered die grinders. A while back I bought a cheap electric grinder, the on off switch broke, and to fix it I just wired it on all the time and plugged it into a variable speed router controller. I wish I had done this a long time ago. so easy to slow down for sanding rolls, or...

Re: How will you go faster?

This is actually the point, and how you optimize. That input shows a rpm drops of 21, 33, and 38% and the point is the curves do not cross. So it is not optimized and cannot be with this data. You should run the engine high enough to understand how it drops off, and knowing the characteristics you ...

Re: Max cranking psig, DCR for pump gas?

I have always checked cranking pressures on engines and found it is not an indicator of what octane is needed. 1982 Ford 200" Inline 6 carbureted cranked 210 psi his was with 300,000+ miles on the engine and it ran best on 87 octane. 165 psi Olds 350 ran best with 91. Brand new 1989 Dodge truck 318...

Yes it was. Sad they are going to bulldoze the shop. Especially when Ed Pink is in his 90's

Re: piston ring compressor

I guess a lot of it is what you get used to using. But I like the Wrinkle style compressor. One thing is that it is fast to use, and with the slots in the band you can watch the rings as they go into the cylinder. If you tighten the compressor to tight it will, especially if it is getting old, it wi...

Re: Engine running comp test.

You check the cranking compression, and then start the engine, when you snap the throttle the snap reading should be 80% of the cranking number. Link to the proper way to do it. It is good to show up valvetrain issues, like broken springs, worn camshaft etc. The trend now is to do a running test wit...

Re: BBC rear main leak

Just from my experience you will be hard pressed to get a seal company to pay a big repair bill for labor. And as mentioned if you show them that picture with gobs of silicone under the seal I am sure they will not pay the claim. I have used a little silicone under the seal from time to time and the...

Stan Weiss wrote: Thu Nov 17, 2022 10:12 am My simulation was done with only a change in tire size.

In other words there is / was no changes made for any difference the tire size might have for traction.

Stan
It is not only traction, gear ratio multiplies torque, tire diameter affects the amount of torque being applied at the rear tires.

Re: How will you go faster?

"U guy have got that 60 ft to ET change relationship inverted back ward. If you chop x off your ET. it typically also chops Y off the 60 ft. But if you just cut the 60 ft by x amount its worth X amount at the stripe." I disagree, my quickest et is always a result of a better 60', and always a multi...

Re: How will you go faster?

I vote converter first, I have track tested alot between 9" 4200 converter 8" 5600 converter The 8" wins every time and it is all in the 60ft. I have used it in several combinations even only turning engine to 6000rpm. Stall speed and the flare off the launch changes as well depending on how much p...

Re: How will you go faster?

For what it is worth I have been drag racing since 1974. I have always done everything to my car. and tuned several other's cars. On your list select a gear so the car crosses the finish line at max HP and select a converter that flashes right before max torque output. Select the tallest tire that w...

Re: Max cranking psig, DCR for pump gas?

Asking for a friend: He built a 1980 iron block, alu head 4 cyl engine for street. Unknown SCR, possibly in the 10.5 range. Lame stock cam, possibly off timing, could be advanced. Cranking compression is 210psig, cold. Worried about detonation w pump gas. What should i tell him? I would be worried ...

Re: Rumpata rumpata stock converter.

When you change a stock engine to a performance engine you are reengineering that engine. All engines are compromises. The lopey idle is a compromise so you can make more power at a higher RPM level. I hear for example all the time put a NOS camshaft because we may one day want to run NOS, problem i...
