I have used paint thinkers not the synthetic ones, they do a good job but there is the need to leave the carburador for a day or more if it is to dirty with gum.

One thing that makes sense to me and Larry M has mentioned, is this simple test: If you put fuel on top of sand paper and blow with air it will eveporote if you do this test on top of a glass it will not eveporote and it is just pushed away. id be more inclined to make up a bath of citric acid to soak it in. should remove the minerals, and not damage the aluminum. may lightly etch it, but likely not.
