Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
Mark, Yeah, I'm still inclined toward a basic cage, with the main hoop moved rearward as far as possible, without completely defeating its purpose. I'll be deleting the rear seating, so no worries of those passengers bouncing off tubes. Full harness restraints in the front seats should limit free mo...

Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
I'm back... No, really - keep your seats. Thank you everyone. Thank you. Finally located a '64 Falcon Sprint. Needs just about everything, but the unibody is nearly pristine. A blank canvas to paint pretty much whatever picture I like. But back to that later. I need to hijack my own thread. I picked...

Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
Still here,
Still reading, thanks. Got side-lined on planning a new house for the missus, so the Falcon project got moved to the back burner. As a result, I've shown up a day late on a couple of promising prospects. I continue to process the thought-provoking input.
Thanks guys!

Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
panic, Very interesting train of thought. Especially if the project requires floorpan repair. Rather than patch a floor with multiple areas of rust-through, cut it all out. Buy a full replacement pan, mock it up for measurements, them remove and fab your backbone tunnel. Having the floor out, where ...

Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
Bobby, Last question first. Nope. I drove 800 miles last month to look at a pair of '64s. When I arrived, the one I would have purchased was no longer for sale, & the back-up car wasn't quite up to the firm price (in MY opinion anyway). I've missed a couple likely candidates in the past month, b...

Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
Thanks for all the replies - Lots of thought-provoking feedback. I kinda figured the answer to an early unibody would ultimately be a cage. I'm not an engineer, nor do I play one on TV, so re-designing the floorpan as a backbone chassis is a bit outta my league. I hadn't considered the threat to one...

Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
OK, I'll throw in another twist. After a couple weeks of internet research, I've found a few folks who are completely unapologetic in their condemnation of roll bars/cages in street-driven vehicles. They point out that a roll bar or cage is unsafe without a helmet, due to the risk of severe head inj...

Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
Hi Brian, I've got a bunch of SBFs awaiting assembly, the top-of-the-heap being a AFR-headed 327, built on one of the new FRPP Boss 302 blocks (still trying to resolve potential compatibility issues over on the engine forum). 400-ish HP/Tq. Stout, but no BB numbers or weight. Rear suspension is a bi...

Re: Chassis stiffening for street car
Well, Even though the mechanicals were derived from the Falcon, the Mustang IS different. I've been doing so much reading lately that I can't keep the sources in order, but at least two accounts I saw spoke of how the Mustang chassis was pretty darned stiff compared to other uni-bodies of the era. I...

Chassis stiffening for street car
Howdy, I'll apologize in advance if this was discussed last week. I DO use the search function, but perhaps I don't use the proper key words. At any rate, I didn't find as much info as I had hoped, so let's rehash it. The platform is a '64-5 Falcon hardtop. I've read these are second only to convert...

Re: AFR 165 SBF Renegade heads evaluation
Mr. Vizard, I have re-read this thread a couple times, & I can't find any mention of whether you used the 8017 (6500rpm) springs, or upgraded to the 7K pieces. If you kept the "stock" springs, can you offer an opinion of the effect/consequence of using the 7000rpm springs, w/o any othe...

Thanks, Walter,
Reckon I need to try & find out where Probe built the gauge point on these SRSs.
Much obliged,
Matt
