Re: Surfacing aluminum head on a model 85 rotary broach

The main concern is the feed rate. The resulting finish from the cutting needs to be so fine as to be reflective so as to not abrade the head gasket fire ring during expansion and contraction . I have no way to change feed rate independent of head RPM, I spoke to a tech at Goodson and he said I can...

Re: Oil Smoke driving me crazy

UPDATE
Swapped to the 1205 gasket with gasgacinch under the gasket. SO far so good. Got it up to operating temp and little smoke. I think it was residual. Shut it down and let it get a good heat soak and restarted with no smoke. Thanks for all the help. I appreciate each persons input.

Does the oil smell like gas? Carb float stick? Might be something simple.
Clear sight plugs. I can see float level. Looks good.

Re: Oil Smoke driving me crazy

I suggest checking the angles of the intake face of the manifold vs the angle on the face of the heads. You can do the this by using lead pellets. Drill a 1/8" hole in your used intake gaskets. Drill the holes between the paired intake ports, even with the floor and roof of the ports. Do this on al...

What part number intake gasket are you using? From the pics it looks like a stock replacement gasket, I do believe they recommend performance gasket with aluminum intakes.
Good point. I’ll throw those on when I reseal it.

What rings? Who did the cylinder hone and to what spec? Today's rings should seat instantly.
Mahle moly top ring. I sub the block work out to a reputable shop. Honed with torque plates 45* 400grit with plateau final.

If you’re running a pcv valve, try removing it and installing another breather.

Check to see if the hose has oil residue in it.

I’ve seen it where oil would run out of the pcv hose.
Im running open breathers on VC

Re: Oil Smoke driving me crazy

Given thought to oil getting past the rings or valve stems? I have, If it sits it blows out a big puff of smoke on start up. when I took the intake off it had a puddle of oil behind the intake valve. Brand new AFR heads. Leak down test is next. Its a 10.5:1 383 on 93 octane. I could have broke some...

Oil Smoke driving me crazy

Brand new 383 I just built for a truck. AFR heads flat top engine. Runs great, once its up to operating temps it has some smoke coming from exhaust on both banks. I changed intakes, gaskets looked oily and there was oil in runners. Same thing happened. Checked studs to make sure they had sealer. Com...

Re: Rod bearing wear

I see two issues that concern me. Not a criticism or anything, just something to keep an eye on. The wear at the edge looks like a fillet radius problem. Does the crank require narrow bearings? Are you using the recommended bearings? The wear in the middle looks like a riser left over from the oil ...

Re: Rod bearing wear

I had to reseal the pan and wanted to spot check the bearings while I had it down.

Compstar crank and rods. Clevite bearings. .0026”-.0029 clearance.

10 dyno pulls and about 40 laps on this engine. I’m going to run it and keep an eye on the filter material. We change oil every 2 nights.

Re: Rod bearing wear

Three things I notice: o One shiny track is at the outer edge of the shell as if the journal was a bit of 'hourglass' shaped or had too big a radius for the shell width. o The witness marks run right out to the joint chamfer, which suggests rod ovality or inadequate bearing eccentricity. o The mark...
