Late 1960s Chevrolet crate engines?
Maybe some of the older guys here can help me out was something. I'm writing a novel with some scenes set in the 1967 to 1970 era involving "regular guy" racers buying high performance parts from Chevrolet. I remember that you could buy L88 engines from GM Performance Parts in 1968-1969, b...

Re: Cryogenic Treatment
I have had a LOT of rifle barrels cryoed, especially machine gun barrels. Back in the '80s, in the days of nickel-a-round surplus ammo and when barrels for the MG42 (German MG that fires 8x57 rifle cartridges @ 20 rounds/sec) were available new in the grease for $20 each, I took a lot of ribbing fro...

I believe this engine was built on the standard deck block:

Re: Fuel burn at wide open throttle
An easier rule of thumb for gasoline engines is to take horsepower produced and divide it by 10. That gives the approximate fuel consumption in Gallons Per Hour. The electronic fuel flow meters in airplanes are very accurate because they are calibrated by the pilot by filling the tank, flying for a ...

Re: Race Engine Challenge
One things that seems to keep getting missed is the visual punch of the entries. When they forced everybody into a single four barrel on a dual plane intake it drives them all toward visual boredom. It would be really cool to see the independent runner Webers, running against the tunnel rams, runni...

Re: Glass Packs as Resonators
I believe the droning noise that people complain about is when the engine is at a specific RPM, and the noise made is the result of that sound bouncing around the car's specific interior volume and shape in such a manner that it is annoying. Change ANYTHING about the combo, and the drone will either...

Re: Best engine for a Q-ship?
John, that AMG is something I had never paid attention to, it seems not many people do. I found this on ebay, wow $9K. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-Mercedes-Benz-E-Class-E55-AMG-469-HP-PANO-LTHR-HK-XENON-CHEAP-BUY-NOW-/142478302973 ... There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes. My exper...

I've never been involved with a transplant involving an American V8 in a foreign car (yet), but if forced to, my inclination would be to try an LT4/8LE90 in a mid-90s Mercedes C220, with AMG suspension pieces and brakes...

Re: Best engine for a Q-ship?
For this example, how fast is fast in the quarter? How fast is fast top speed? SNIP A nice stealthy engine package is a LS with a Whipple, very compact and short enough for almost any stock hood appearance installation. As a point of comparison, a 2003-2006 E55 AMG is about 470 HP, 510 TQ, 4300 pou...

Best engine for a Q-ship?
This really a "whole car" question, but I think the engine is the most important part of the puzzle. If you wanted to build the ultimate sleeper, the fast car that doesn't draw a second glance, what would you do? As has been pointed out in another thread started by the guy who wants to bui...

Re: cheap BBC race block
My friend Dick Durant, an amateur SCCA A/SR and Can-Am racer, showed me a ruined standard-deck BBC he tried this with circa 1972 in his Lola T163. He said it cracked through almost immediately but made great power while it lasted.

Re: Rod ratio and dwell time... doesn't make sense
SNIP What happens as the crank pin goes from 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock is the pin moves upwards and so the piston does too, but the crank pin also moves toward the centre line and this gives additional upward movement to the piston. (pointy top sine wave). From 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock, though, the cra...
