Re: Building A Nostalgic 1970s Fuelie Headed 350 SBC

Re: What Happens When..............

If I’m not mistaken, the factory cam had a LSA of 115.

Will you be testing with the correct exhaust manifolds for a 390hp 427?

Re: Building A Nostalgic 1970s Fuelie Headed 350 SBC

Well, he runs it in Stock...... so it kinda has to be a Pontiac.

I posted a couple of pics and flow numbers for some 186 SBC heads in your old school build thread.

The heads on this Pontiac 350 flow way less than those did.

Re: Building A Nostalgic 1970s Fuelie Headed 350 SBC

A friend of mine runs a 68 Firebird in Stock. He wanted to try something different, so he build a 350 for it(usually runs a 400). Heads have 1.96” intake valves, cam is only .420 lift...... weighs around 3250 with that motor in it. 10.99 on its first pass down the track. You have to think it could g...

Re: SBC head ID. Weird!

Look like World Sportsman II’s to me.

I built a bracket race 383 with a set over 20 years ago....... pretty decently ported(flowed 280-ish)..... made about 600hp.

Re: Building an 11 second 70's nostalgic SBC

These were supposedly the original heads off a 69 z28 that was getting restored. 186 castings. They had been done before...... which you have to expect when they’re 50 years old. They came to me with the radiused valve job, 2.02/1.60 valves. Tested at 28”, 4.00 bore, no tube on ex: As rec’d: Lift———...

Re: Cam for 406 mud racer

Mud guys usually want high wheel speed.
A lot of stall...... buzz the motor pretty high.

The new cam seems short to me for the application.

406”, high CR, small heads, want some top end........

I’d have been looking more along the lines of the 268 cam.

Re: Building an 11 second 70's nostalgic SBC

At 3800lbs........ the difference in power requirements for a 12.75 vs an 11.75 is about 100hp. Just build what you want, the way you want....... and it’ll run what it runs. In 1977...... There was no internet, loaded with car forums and you tube videos to glean advice and instruction from. There we...

Re: Building an 11 second 70's nostalgic SBC

I started racing in 1979. At that time, I don’t recall very many “late model”(for the time), 3800lb, sb powered cars that would “drives great on the street” (as was mentioned at the beginning of the thread) that were running 11’s. My vision of that is a car someone drove to the track, ran 11’s, and ...

Re: Issue trying to set total timing

20-something years ago I was the clown calling the MSD tech line and not wanting to believe what they were telling me. I had a motor on the dyno with a crank trigger ignition, and using my Snap On dial back timing light(the kind with a knob), which up to that point had never seemed to do anything od...

Re: cilinderhead question

The factory intake was not fitting th exhaust ports on my Dart heads.
I doubt the factory intake would fit the exhaust ports on any heads.

Re: Issue trying to set total timing

This won’t answer your question....... but I prefer to use timing lights without any knobs, buttons, read outs.

Make a line on the damper at 35*, then use that relative to the zero and the scale on the timing mark to set it where you want it.

Re: cilinderhead question

For a “just get it to move under it’s own power” situation, I don’t know why you’d need anything other than two serviceable heads from any 70’s-80’s 350.
