Re: Cam Recomendations for a 383 SBC

SlowMalibu: I see you are a new member. Mike Jones of Jones Cams runs this site, and he is probably one of the best resources for cams you will find. Do not make the mistake of picking a catalog cam based on internet reading. You will not (unless you are really luck) get the most out of your build t...

Re: HEI pulling timing. Any solutions?

Tuner, take a closer look at the data sheet. The delay they are specifying includes the darlington transistor (MJ10012), an 8mH coil, and some other bits and pieces. It is not just the IC. Note the delay is referenced to the schematic of Figure 1.

Re: HEI pulling timing. Any solutions?

I though I would add a little background information to this discussion. I am not a HEI expert, but I have had to dig into the circuit a bit when mine went on the fritz. This chip (at least according to the data sheet) is used on aftermarket (Delco) HEI ignitions. I would guess there are other chips...

Re: Math Problem

"There is no length of time that it has zero velocity" While this is technically correct, it doesn't really tell the whole story. At TDC the piston slows to a velocity so small as to be immeasurable and (finitely) undefinable. What's small? in ft/sec, not one millionth of a ft/sec, not one...

Re: Math Problem

"At TDC it has zero velocity, zero acceleration and so zero force on it." This is incorrect. The velocity does go to zero at TDC, however, the acceleration peaks at TDC. Let's assume that the rod length is long enough to approximate the piston position as a sinusoid. Take the derivative fo...

Re: EPDM rubber hose carrying gas

I know it is EPDM because it is marked COHLINE 2337 and EPDM.

Arlancam509, thanks. Using the website, EPDM comes out as poor in use with gasoline. That's probably the best info I've had so far. Going to swap out the hose, even if it is a PITA.

EPDM rubber hose carrying gas

I have a new project car and the PO ran a gas return line through an EPDM rubber hose that is really supposed to be for brake lines. From my research, EPDM is not great in gas applications. My problem is the hose is really tough to get at and I would like to put off replacing it until this winter wh...

Re: Engine block painting

I use VHT or Duplicolor engine enamels. They seem to have good durability and temperature resistance, but their adhesion on a cast engine block that has years of soaked in oil is not great. I have tried all kinds of solvents to prep the block for painting, but have yet to get real solid adhesion. It...

Thanks digger, amazing what members of the forum turn up.

Interesting the different bearing colors only span about .0007"". They must really want the clearances dialed in perfectly.

Re: Question on Crankshaft Wear

Great information guys. PackardV8, I assume you meant purple when you said white is the thickest? Your list didn’t include the white version, or is there an additional white bearing beyond the purple? Modok, I’m working on buying/borrowing a 1-2”, and 2-3” mic. I know I’m fishing around in the dark ...

Re: Question on Crankshaft Wear

Tom, as far as I can tell I can’t get plus .001” bearings. The BMW world doesn’t seem to have the resources that the SBC world has. I can get + .010” though.

Question on Crankshaft Wear

I looked at a used crankshaft for a stroker build of a BMW M20 engine. The crankshaft was out of a BMW S52 engine (which drops right in to the M20). This particular crank, according to the seller, was pulled out of a running engine with 140,000 miles. I did a visual inspection and the journals looke...

Re: Startup of rebuilt engine

I would add to make sure you have the cooling system set up so the (inevitable) trapped air can easily escape. I would like to hear the pro's opinions on how they make sure the system can burp during first start up. I leave the radiator cap off at first start.
