Re: 400 SBC build

If I understand how to calculate CSA and Port Volume for a engine, this is what I came up with. For a 406: 6000 rpm CSA = 2.23 6500 rpm CSA = 2.42 This leaded to figure out my 406 port volume: 6000 rpm port volume = 200 6500 rpm port volume = 216 So, based on this information, if I plan to turn the ...

Re: 400 SBC build

This is all great information. I just got back from the machine shop and block is already .040 over....so the machinist says its junk. Back to square one. Looks like if I want to do this, a 400 SBC build...going to have to get a new aftermarket block. Why is he calling your block junk at .040" over...

Any other comments?
My 406 with Stock 906 Vortec's went the best of 11.49 last night with the Elgin 1165P hyd cam.
Impressive, not a drag car though.

Re: 400 SBC build

All of those cams will be fine at 1/2 point less compression. The 1/2 point difference might show up at the drag strip, but for a street vehicle it would seem like cheap insurance. I understand the reason to take out 1/2 point of compression. However I fell like that is to much, maybe settle on 10....

Re: 400 SBC build

Well, Im down to three cams. Not sure how they are going to work out with my 10.5 compression, but here they are. All are flat tappets. Mike Jones cam - 284/288 and 228/230 @ .050 for .528/.528 lift on 1.6 rockers and 110 lsa It appears this cam will be around 195 to 210 psi cranking compression on ...

Re: 400 SBC build

Even though it’s tempting I wouldn’t aim for a specific hp number. For a street car it doesn’t matter if it’s 450 or 500 hp. I would aim for a mild mannered engine with broad Powerband. You should still be able to make burnouts for distance Yes, I agree. Just trying to make sure I can get as much a...

Re: 400 SBC build

Here is the plan for the street 400. Looking to get 475 to 500 horse around 6000 rpms. 500 ft lbs of torque too. 93 octane build. Using a 400 block Eagle rotating assembly with cast crank, I beam rods, forged pistons with -16 dishes. Considering a flat tappet cam with 285/285 and 235/235 @.050 for a...

Re: 400 SBC build

The 350 can be changed to be supercharger friendly by swapping pistons to deep D dish type cast hyper or forged to drop the compression to 8.5 or less. a -22cc or more 350 piston allows the The crank will likely need to be rebalanced.. Then lots of ways to go supercharged... The .040" 400 block doe...

Re: 400 SBC build

Also if you have a late 350 roller block and a steel crank consider building a low cr 350 supercharged street engine. You cannot beat supercharged power on the street. Discribe that 350 engine in more detail. What is your performance goal on your Chevelle.? Its a zz4 short block with 10.2 to 1 comp...
