Re: Deck clearance?

I think there are guys here who would raise their hand for 0.030" on an iron block SBC. I'd say 0.035", closely verified in each cylinder, is safe for you. 0.040" and up is just giving away power. How much power do you think is lost going from .030" to .041" recently put together a 385 with hypereu...

Re: Question for those who build and sell engines

Even if you go to court you lose. Time away from the shop, lawyers, are expensive. The best way to avoid it I would think is a healthy, lengthy, comprehensive disclaimer. Make the customer read it, and put a spot for them to initial it at the end of every paragraph. Driving home the point that you w...

Re: Helping air around a curve?

Richard Holdener did some testing years ago where he tested basically every tpi intake on the market, along with a single plane and dual plane. Look at the very first test of a stock tpi intake, then the 2nd, or 3rd test where the entire intake was extensively extrude hone ported. It was a back to b...

Re: externally balanced 89 Chevy flywheel interchangeability

Not sure if it is true or not, but have always been lead to believe the 87-96 corvettes were balanced to a slightly better standard from the factory. Makes sense when the few flexplates i have seen from them had additional holes drilled in them and they were removed from 100% stock c4 corvettes. Whe...

Re: Issue trying to set total timing

I agree with PRH. I have seen at least three times where dial back lights were not correct. I stick with my 30 year old Su chrome gun. No frills. always works. Went through this last fall, a simple analog timing light, old sears penske, any of the old sun stuff etc works great, seems to have no tro...

Re: overheating question

Did some tests. Ignition timing had no effect I could tell on the coolant temperature. I do know from previous tests my engine is happier at around 195-200°F. I have tried a 180°F thermostat before but it seemed to have a negative effect on the way it runs and idles. I can imagine with a carb this ...

Re: IMPORT High Performance OEM Type Hydraulic Roller Lifters

Should have said, here in Michigan, lots of low mileage rusted late model cars in junkyard to pull good parts from, you can get a good feel for how the thing was maintained by knowing what to look for. Have a cousin that owns a small salvage yard and have access to it for well below scrap price on m...

Re: IMPORT High Performance OEM Type Hydraulic Roller Lifters

I'd think used junkyard pieces would be a better option than a substandard piece made with questionable quality steel, and machining practices that are consistently producing inconsistently sized parts. And if it was a budget claimer type engine the emphasis should be on reliability, low cost, and p...

Is this really a place you want to try to save 150 bucks? For the price of the originals from a verified source why waste time even considering these things? I'm sure you already know this but here goes. 12499225 gm Delphi standard replacement.$312.27 88958689 Cadillac racing lifter $383.86 For anyt...

Re: How much does moving the cam affect peak rpm?

YES ... In my testing over the years, if you advance the cam and make more power at the top of the RPM range, you probably have an issue with something to do with the exhaust. what sort of things have you found on the exhaust that were lacking that necessitated an advanced cam other than what Camki...

Re: How much does moving the cam affect peak rpm?

Every engine combo is different. Rule of thumb: if you want to shift the power down in the RPM, advance the cam in 2 degree steps, until it no longer helps If you want to help the top-end power, do the opposite. Make sure you have the P2V clearance to make the moves. Don't be surprised if the engin...

Re: Holley 850...Made in China?

I don't have a problem with the fact production is going overseas. (I do but you can't fight it. That ship sailed 20 years ago). However, there is a problem when the prices being charged are high and the product is an inferior offshore copy. When I was a kid my folks paid a premium for brand name qu...

Re: 2.5" v 3" exhaust on a 500HP 406sbc ?

My 11sec 406sbc runs thru a custom made 2.5" full dual exhaust system with hand made custom 2.5" in/out mufflers of my own design and full tail pipes. The mufflers are a modified tri-flow design but with propriatory acoustic and flow management. No voo-doo, just physics at work. In back to back dra...
