Re: Cooling fan shootout - Engine Masters

I guess that settles it then. You don't believe us that it takes 30hp to run some fans at high engine speeds, and we don't believe you that you've found a perpetual motion fan that can cool down a race engine without using any power.

Re: Misfiring, then rod noise?

2010 should still be the old EJ25 (255 or 257), right? Those short blocks are still available brand new for about $2k.

Re: Misfiring, then rod noise?

At dealership level, we would never rebuild a subie short block. It was always a new short block and rebuild the heads if needed.

Re: Misfiring, then rod noise?

Cut it open and look for metal in the paper media.

When we say "cut it open," don't use a hack saw. There are filter cutters made for that, or use a muffler pipe cutter or even a chisel. You want to open it like a tuna can, not add more debris into the mix.

Re: Question for those who build and sell engines

I put it in writing they needed to change the module or no warranty expressed or implied on the work I looked at that was well and the installer did his work correctly. The boat owner was not completely honest about the deal either. Had another guy that flashed the module telling them they did not ...

Re: L98 TPI 350 endurance race combination

Get a clarification from the tech guys on the Mexican SS. Don't assume anything. It IS a north american car, and plenty of chevy engines (and vehicles) are made in Mexico. Argue the point that their rules need to include Mexico. Throw NAFTA in there to confuse them further. I've had good luck with t...

Re: L98 TPI 350 endurance race combination

Do the rules state the engine must match the VIN of the car? Regarding G-bodies, In 1984 Chevy had a Mexican made Monte Carlo SS with the LM1 350 4bbl rated at 175hp. If the rules merely state that if it's produced from the factory, but not in your particular car, then call it that. Regarding 2nd ge...

Re: L98 TPI 350 endurance race combination

Bitch about the rules? I was a nascar crew chief long enough to look at those rules and salivate at the possibilities. But one thing is certain, and you touched on it; you can't go out there and kick everyone's ass from day one. You NEED to sandbag and just barely eek out the other cars if you're bl...

Re: CC ing chambers

Unless you are given the option to disagree with it which in my case happened it was wrong and we had to tear down at the track to measure things. We were considered over and DQ'd till I brought up the small yet still measurable volume between the top ring and top of piston. They conceded after tha...

Re: Cooling fan shootout - Engine Masters

Come on people, look at the 5 HP electric motor on your shop air compressor, do you see two 5/8" belts? A 3/8" V belt is not going to deliver anywhere close to 30 HP and last 50,000 miles. It's not eating up 30hp the whole time, only when at slower than freeway speeds, or when you drop down a gear ...

Re: Cooling fan shootout - Engine Masters

I wouldn't call 30hp unreasonable. High, but certainly within the plausible range. Don't try to compare the volume of air moved by the electric fans on a modern car to the volume of air moved by an engine driven fan. The engine driven fan can move an absolutely huge amount of air in comparison. As a...

Re: CC ing chambers

nascar officials commonly use that Katech Whistler thing for checking compression, which brings up another point (pardon the pun). Be cognizant of how the officials will check the compression ratio. Carefully observe their method for checking and compare their results with your own measurements.

Re: EFI Fuel Pressure Drop ~5psi

A couple of things.

Check for voltage drop at the pump as BOOT suggested. Also plug the bypass/return line to check max pump output. It should easily exceed the regulated pressure.

Re: Can Billet CNC Cut Suspension arm, replace factory cold formed arm?

OK, we call those "Ball Joints" in the US. If you can somehow get the old ones out without damaging the control arm, it's common to replace with spherical bearings and a stud that also makes the ball joint adjustable for roll center. http://www.colemanracing.com/Ball-Joint-Mono-Ball-Lower-Mid-Size-G...

Re: Can Billet CNC Cut Suspension arm, replace factory cold formed arm?

Welded aluminum suspension parts are a no-no. If you used 6061-T6, it'll be T0 at the weld and will crack right in the middle of the weld. 7075-T6 (nor 2024, for that matter) should not be welded. There are a few ways to get the temper back up after welding (even using a regular oven), but for all i...
