Re: Small cams on 106-108 LSA’s

I believe the rest of the combo needs to be taken into account when discussing LSA. Tight LSA cams generally work with FREELY flowing exhaust systems. A restrictive exhaust KILLS a cam with overlap. Small cams are often used with stock exhaust manifolds and small exhaust systems. Overlap is bad wit...

Re: Small cams on 106-108 LSA’s

I am running a Howards 270/278, 217/225, .495/.500 108 LSA cam in a 9.6:1 355 with Vortec heads. My first experience with a "tight" LSA cam. I couldn't be happier. ~16" vacuum at idle, just a slight lope at 800 rpm idle, and pulls hard in the midrange. With a manual trans, it will also pull down to ...

Re: "Shop Truck" 350 SBC Cam And Carb Choice??

From stock 882 heads to vortec could easily gain 30-40 HP. :D Agreed, but with those flattops, compression will likely exceed 10.1:1 replacement vortec L31 dish pistons w/ metric ringpak are nice https://www.summitracing.com/parts/slp-h815dcp30/part-type/pistons H815 will likely put compression rig...

Re: Budget 350 RV build

a few years ago i built a 383 for towing. 1 ton with 400 and 4.11s. It made 500 tq and only 275 hp. Fellow loved it. Tried several inakes and carbs 2101 with a quadrajet was the best. It had truck heads with sodium filled exhaust valves. I dont remember the cam but it was specd by comp. He towed wi...

Re: Cam advice for a mild 327

Late to the party here, but about 12-13 years ago, I had a 327 that was basically built to 300hp specs, (64cc heads, flat-top pistons in a factory short block - "factory" as in still running the same rings and bearings the factory installed). It was in a '65 Nova with a PG and 3.08 gears. I used a R...

Re: camel hump vs vortec

Typically what I've seen the best 062/906 with zero shift can flow 240 @ around .500 lift unported and thats rare. Mark... what is 'typical' for a set of unported 062s? Had mine on a bench with a 1205 radius plate and here's what we measured: .300 189.8 .350 210.0 .400 227.2 .450 230.6 .500 227.8 C...

Re: Stock and hopped Z-28 engines here..

While the 351 hp quoted above is impressive for 50 yr old tech and only 302 ci, in today's terms, that's not a lot of power. Especially when you consider that you are living with a rumpity-rump cam and 11:1 CR, and a real lack of torque below 3000 rpm. Consider how much easier (and cheaper) it would...

Re: Stock Eliminator secrets?

Do class rules allow you to modify those tubes at all (additional holes, etc). Talking about the bleed tubes AND the POE tubes. Yes. We do a lot of work in that area. I'd ask you to share, but I'm sure you don't want to give away your secrets. LOL I love playing with these carbs for my street car.....

Re: Stock Eliminator secrets?

Looking very close at the pic of the secondary air bleed tubes... depth would matter, as does position of Holley Emulsion bleeds. Do class rules allow you to modify those tubes? I've got some thoughts.... The secondary air bleeds orifice/depth/height and the secondary pull over enrichment system ar...

Re: hydraulic lifter valve adjustment

As many of you know, Chevy had problems with valve stem seals causing smoking on startup for at least most of the 80's and 90's. At dealership level, the tool kit to fix included a manifold with 4 hoses to air up a bank of cylinders at one time and a steel plate that depressed all 8 valve springs a...

Re: Stock Eliminator secrets?

Something I noticed on the engine bay photo above... a PCV valve. Seems like even mild street engine guys love to eliminate them and run open breathers (I don't agree, BTW... PCV = good). Really didn't expect to see a PCV on a stocker.

Re: Stock Eliminator secrets?

Probably shouldn't comment, but don't the newer votec heads flow better, but they aren't, "1st Gen.", design heads? pdq67 The Vortecs do flow better, but there not a "early" head. A 441 head responds exceptionally well to mods, and will flow with a modified Vortec from what I've seen. Theres 441 ca...

Re: Stock Eliminator secrets?

A semi-related question.... Since we are talking 275/327 stocker combos....

Is the '69 LM1 255hp 350 still a popular combo for stock class racing? Seems like this engine has a pretty favorable hp rating (unless NHRA applies a correction factor).
