Re: Can you make 600hp with iron vortec heads?

I'm not familiar with any such racing class, but a local builder put together a 383" SBC with iron Vortec heads, single 4-bbl and is claiming 600hp. He's an experienced old-school guy, but that seems steep. Have you done as well or better lately? How highly strung is acceptable? Drag Week durabilit...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

On my Vortec 406 I had el-cheapo 1 5/8" headers and the car ran 120mph, I switched to my 1 3/4 Hooker S/C's and the car picked up nothing, natta, 0. Many times there's been a demonstration of how effective a small tube primary header is. What would have been the secondary specs in that back to back...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

Kevin, My opinion is it is to hard to lock in a definite answer to your question. This is where Larry's program gives a really good starting point on induction size including headers etc. I wanted to test open headers this weekend compared to full 3" exhaust but we got rained out. I think that last...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

If its a "street strip" car would you not want to optimize the cam overlap and exhaust valve events to best work with the headers/exhaust system you are going to use? The " best cam" may well be different for a closed high perf street exhaust system with mufflers than if with Open headers. Its not ...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

A related question I think: With regards to VE and improving it, what are you opinions on overlap and the exhaust induced induction (5th) cycle? I'm in the camp of the right amount of overlap and good exhaust, as in tuned length open headers (track days) will give that boost in VE. Some of the math ...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

Once I am getting close to where I think it should be I usually do a port mould then cut it in sections and put on graph paper. Short of pouring a mold, can a guy get in there with a pair of inside dividers and get a measurement that way? That's all I use, multiple dividers set to the critical dime...

Re: clear coating engine

Not aluminum but I've used VHT clear caliper paint on cast iron heads. Durability was OK however they were a little discolored after a while.

Re: So which heads will get my 358 in the high 10's

A better title would be "what driveline behind my 350 will get me in the 10s" This has a lot of significance with respect to where I'm going next. I had posted earlier (a few years back) about my perceived HP claim based on weight, MPH and ET. I happily assumed I was reasonably well north of the 40...

Re: Top end oiling issue after hydraulic roller change.

How many turns of the rocker nut did you apply for how much preload? And what's the rocker ratio? Set them to zero lash then preload of 1/4 turn on 7/16 studs. 1.6 ratio For what it's worth the math says that's about .020". One full turn would equal: ((1 + 1.6) ÷ 1.6) x 1/20 =~.081 I'm not certain ...

Re: how much horsepower will a given size exhaust pipe support?

Vizzard had a formula, for zero loss system. Something about you need 2.2 cfm per hp worth of flow and exhaust pipe can flow 115 cfm per square inch So you back calculate. Min size for no loss. If you exceed that, it can make power but you are supposedly leaving alot on the table and suffering more...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

New 255/60/15 R series radials. Still turning tyres off the hit as shown in the 60ft Are you liking the new tires? I'm assuming those are the Mickey Thompson ET Street R Radial Tires 3553. I'm in the market for 255/50/16's myself but M/T only offers the SS version in a 16". I ordered another set of...
