Re: Inexpensive 350 Build
But that was before they started using moly faced rings. Somewhere in the 80's GM changed something metallurgical in their blocks and bore wear was reduced as well. Put a 5/64" moly ring in a L31 and I really doubt it'll make it to 200K miles. Moly is better, and better blocks are better, but ...

Re: Inexpensive 350 Build
Except that when the skinny ring thing is applied to carbureted engines retroactively, the same reduction in bore wear and friction and improvement in power is seen as in the OE EFI engines. EFI existed before the switch away from big fat rings and they ate the bores out pretty much the same as the ...

Re: Carb recommendation SBC 383
They make an annular 850? Downlegs will give you fits in a 1.56" venturi on that combo, not enough signal.

Re: Inexpensive 350 Build
Skinnier 2nd ring & oil ring is wasted with the 2mm top ring.

15-20 HP if not more, lower temps, cleaner oil, longer bore life?

Re: holley 3310 chokeless body recommendations
The vacuum tube is necessary. I know this may be shocking, but the recent crew at Holley does some really dumb stuff. It's almost as if the knowledge of how carbs work was lost when the old timers retired and then a bunch of 20-year-olds came along and tried to reinvent it.

Re: Inexpensive 350 Build
Just keep the L31 pistons in mind for the next one (and remember to avoid the dumb ones with the 2mm top rings).

Re: holley 3310 chokeless body recommendations
The current-production carbs, complete, straight from Holley, do not have the nipple and haven't since... late '80s/early '90s or something? I'm not sure exactly which 3310 revision was the first without it, but probably the 3310-6 or something, which was way back a long time ago (I believe the curr...

Re: Inexpensive 350 Build
What is the advantage of a 2mm (.078") top ring over a 5/64" (.078") top ring?
The L31-type pistons are 1.5/1.5/3mm, same as the LS. Less friction, less heat, less wear, better sealing.

Re: Inexpensive 350 Build
224-3497.030
But I don't see the point in that, since the 2mm top ring is .0787" (metric version of 5/64")..

Re: Inexpensive 350 Build
What ring package - 1.5/1.5/3, like the later L31 used?
