Re: What Happens When..............

I love this build. Thank you for sharing. I am very curious, with so much low end torque what converter and gears are you using? Brent Heres what happened: My car weighs 3720 with 140 pounds of extra weight added in the rear ready to race, I did not have the extra weight in the car which made it we...

Re: What Happens When..............

You are absolutely correct, I had my cam grinder copy the factory cam on a 1960s cam core and I had him change LC to 112. I used 1970s NOS TRW hyd lifters. I did use 2 inch headers. I understand the intent of this test; but I have to wonder what kind of performance you could get with a modern lobe ...

Re: 496 for a El Camino

Is there a way to identify if a turbo 400 has the straight cut planetary ? I see some turbo 400's have HD cast into the bell housing. And some have a 6 lug torque convertor. I even pull one out of a giant motorhome that had an E-brake on the tail. EDIT: Is the straight cut planet the only thing tha...

rfoll wrote: Fri Jul 16, 2021 10:44 am If I remember correctly, the turbo 475 is the truck transmission with the straight cut gears and a really low 1st gear ratio.
Correct, but it (475) does utilize a 2.48 first gear. Remember the Monte had a 2.52 first gear, but I hope my power will make the difference, I will run a drag radial.

Re: 496 for a El Camino

I'm interested in your project because I want to do something similar for my '69 Caprice. In the car now is a generic mid-'70s vintage 454 with a stock cam and th400 with a heavy duty RV converter, 12 bolt open 2.56 gears. '69 hi-rise cast iron qjet, iron exhaust manifolds, dual exhaust 2.5 headpip...

I am not a smart man, but even I understand that he was talking about the track elevation. 900 ft MSL.

Re: 496 for a El Camino

A friend of mine did this first time out with his 496 70 Monte Carlo, stock converter, 2.56 gear, 228 @ .050 cam, 578 HP 496 600 TQ, on BFG radials @ 4275 pounds, he built the engine himself along with the head work, shows great potential with the 2.00 sec 60 foot while trying to maintain traction o...

Re: 496 for a El Camino

Vortec Pro, could you explain the reasoning behind using 2.56 gears? Ok, when you have 620 plus HP and 640 plus TQ with a 228.@ 050 cam and 500 inches and live in a 29.30 baro, this makes for a situation a stock GM Turbo pass car converter with a Turbo 475 and a 2.56 gear in a 3800 pound car will b...

496 for a El Camino

In the near future I plan to build a 1970 el Camino black or blue with factory type black stripes. I will build a 496 with GM oval port heads, 228/238 @ .050 111 LS hyd roller, Mahle pistons, 6.385 rod, Performer RPM air gap with the cowl induction hood. Also I will use a old school Moroso deep pan ...
