I’ve seen old timing covers repurposed as belt drive covers used in asphalt modified.
Jesel may offer a drive cover if you go that route.

What advantage would there be if you cut smaller ring grooves in that piston?
What problem will the empty 5/64” grooves cause?

You’ll want a Jesel bearing lifter for that spring pressure
And .903 dia.
