Re: .0475" ring seal

ARt,
Not sure how different your engine is but that has been the standard top ring on Subarus for quite a while now. Same with a lot of GM V-8s. I dont know where it would need any special treatment.

Re: Engine builder / Machinist

I think there are a couple of "tiers" ? I know of more that one machine shop that do not assemble engines at all and would probably have a hard time doing it properly. They can do all of the machine work absolutely perfectly but that is as far as it goes. I also know a few excellent engine "builders...

Re: New Motor: Strange Oil Leaks

Go to your local parts store and buy a bottle of UV leak checking die and put in the oil and run it for a while. If you dont have a UV flashlight buy that also while you are at the store. It will show you where it is coming from. https://www.autozone.com/test-scan-and-specialty-tools/uv-light-and-ac...

Re: Superflow parts

Yup. Called Superflow today and no return call. Unreal. I am not defending anyone and really have nothing in common with this discussion but . . . . . its the day before Thanksgiving, all of the other businesses in the complex I am in closed at around noon today and will be closed tomorrow and Frid...

Re: SBF- bearing clearance with calipers & 0.001 US bearings

You simply cannot measure crankshafts or bearings with a caliper. Period. The rods need to be torqued to specs to measure. Same with the mains. The bearings don't look bad at all to me. If you dont have the proper tools there is a quick way to check clearances that will at least let you know if you ...

Re: Dynamic Balancing Jeep/Dodge 4.7

Centered is correct. My own tests long ago prove that out. Dave, I always center but ..... next time you have a crank on the balancer and finished, move all of the bobweights to the front of each journal and spin it and see what you get. I don't think the difference will be worth the trouble of mak...

Re: Dynamic Balancing Jeep/Dodge 4.7

Bob, That is the first time I have seen one of those. Definitely strange. You could probably put all of the bobweights either to the front or back and be fairly close. When I first bought my balancer over 20 years ago I was told to put them all towards the front. I did it that way for a year or so b...

Re: late model hemi 5.7 cylinder head question

If you are just doing a clean up cut why would you need to cut .020" off ??? Those heads generally clean up with less than a .005" cut and to be honest with you if they are warped more than that they should be replaced.

Re: Spark Plug Hole Defect

I thought those heads used a gasketed plug ? If so I dont see a problem. I would be more concerned with the depth of the hole. I have had several sets of Dart heads in the past where the plug hole was not machined deep enough. The plug ended up in the hole in the combustion chamber side almost 1/4"

Belgian1979 wrote: Sat Nov 13, 2021 2:36 pm Ok, but would it hurt?
It could very well ruin them but the only one that knows is the ring manufacturer. I trust them to make the rings pretty much ready to install. When we have to file fit them it affects the ends but other than that I say leave them alone.
