Re: Piston ring install lube

I clean the bores then spray them with Pioneer dry graphite, wipe the overspray and excess out then apply 2 stroke oil or ATF by hand. I put nothing on the rings and I coat the piston skirts with graphite also. Everything looks new when it is time for a freshen.

Re: SBC Shaft Mount Geometry with different int/exh lifts

You should compensate for any difference but I usually just leave the exhaust tips up .015-.020"(mainly so the people that get their hands in there later don't screw things up too bad).

Re: Dart SHP Cam bearing failure

I ran into a similar issue and switched to Calico coated ACL race cam bearings, No problems now.

The oil was hot enough it melted the cam bearing material.

Re: Mid lift rockers

Well, at least we had quite a few different choices of rockers depending on what a person wanted to do.

I guess the other side of the coin is that most people really didn't know what they wanted to do...

And to many it didn't make much difference.

Re: Is one tooth off (cam/crank) noticeable on daily driver?

Once a long time ago the guy that owned my shop building had a Subaru that always ran a little warm and was sluggish. It had been like that the whole time he owned it. Anyway, It had a crank seal leak and when I took it apart I noticed the one cam was off a tooth. When i put it back together correct...

Re: Stepping way outside my comfort zone here...scan tool?

All you have to do to eliminate big contenders is unplug the MAF and note that the O2 sensors go close to 900mv(rich) wide open throttle on the road. If the O2 sensors will go rich like they are supposed to full throttle that eliminates a fuel issue. If the O2 sensors go lean(less than 500mv) at WOT...

Re: Stepping way outside my comfort zone here...scan tool?

Unplug the MAF and see if it runs ok then, sounds like a bad MAF to me(and you won't be able to tell on a scan tool). Basically, if it runs ok otherwise it is either the MAF or low fuel pressure. If it was low fuel pressure it would turn on the check engine light when pulling a trailer. If the distr...

Re: Dealing With Right Stuff

I use clear rtv. I have had clear silicone filling over a quarter inch gap on sprint car engines with raised runner heads with no problems. I use a razor blade and slice the silicone when I want to remove the manifold. The right stuff is necessary due to vacuum or something? You don't even need bolt...

Re: purestock/streetstock engine build

Funny they have a vacuum rule, we used to use vacuum advance to advance the timing a bunch at idle(improving vacuum). A couple things to think about: Some 305 cranks weigh less than 350 cranks with the same casting #. Lightweight pistons with narrow rings(anything for reduced drag or parasitic power...

If you are doing small parts it can be worth using plain green antifreeze in a crock pot.

Did they replace the spark plugs? Fouled plugs can make it backfire.

Re: L31 vortec 350 fuel injection

You have to at least replace the one injector in the spider.

There is a newer updated injector spider that places the injectors near the ports, it may be worth looking at updating.

Re: cracked hypereutectic piston caught just in time

Lucky,

Usually hypereutectic pistons shatter like glass.

I also do not use them and prefer cast aluminum or forged.

Once, long ago I had a 1971 400 that I beat pretty hard. I literally had a piston fall apart in my hand when I took it apart and 5 pistons were cracked(cast).
