Re: Metal clad valve seal removal

on some import heads they are so difficult to remove you have to kill the seal with a torch in order to yank them off.

bthomas wrote: Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:25 am Just depends on the pistons you get. Some manufacturers are better about custom stuff than others. Last set I bought it was only $10 a piston up charge for a small change like that.

Re: Custom pistons or zero deck the block with off-the-shelf pistons?

Iron blocks usually clean up with .005 or less unless it was absolutely cooked at some point in it's life.

unless a max effort racing engine, chasing 0 deck height by means of decking isn't the way to go.

moly top ring and boost?

can I run a moly top ring in a low boost application without worrying too much about the moly getting knocked out of the face of the ring? If the thing starts rattling and the guy driving it can't hear a thing because the external wastegate is screaming straight to atmosphere, is the engine going to...

Re: Nissan SR20VE circuit race build

would lover to hear that thing at full song knight! you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of the crankshaft would you? didn't know SR had two different style crankshafts. Just what you can see here, didn't take any before fitting it. 20231206_122756.jpg so it's a "semi" counterweight c...

Re: fitting camshaft

I make my own broaching slugs in my lathe. They are huge time savers and do not remove the coating off cam bearings.Way better than scraping. steel or aluminum? the raised rounded "bump" in the center of the broach.....001" proud of the of the camshafts journal diameter, or greater?

it is tight from a stack up of tolerances.

It will either seal up or it won't.
a composite graphite style gasket is going to be more tolerant to a less than perfect deck surface.

fitting camshaft

are there commercially available, adjustable cam bearing "broach" tools available to the engine building world? got some snug coated cam bearings in a LS vortec I am trying to sort right now. I would scrape the bearing if it were not coated. I can polish a few tenths off the cam as well, b...

Re: 71 chevy 350 headgaskets

The flatness of the cylinder head is the critical factor as long as the block decks are clean. if it takes say .005 to get the deck of the block true, (and I skip that step) how is that .018" shimstock gasket going to have any chance of long term survival? the heads have already been decked, h...
