Re: Mallory Dist problems
It's a factory HEI, no resistance wire. Earlier years had points and I've herd of that issue more than a few times tho.

Re: Mallory Dist problems
Off, I only got it warm enough to set the timing and it's cooled off since. It took a lot to get it to idle so I could set the timing and I don't wanna wash the cylinders or w/e to try and test the alt or that connection running. I tested the alt not long ago at 14.7 or so up to 3500rpm, but someone...

Re: Mallory Dist problems
No clue Geoff, if it's internal electronics then I'm SOL edit: mag pickup I just tried this -routed coil wires far away from hot, nada -swapped the coil wire for a know good one, nada -swapped to the Mallory coil(part num they actually recommend), nada -swapped the hei plugs wires, nada Nothing made...

Re: Mallory Dist problems
Dist only has three connectors
1) for programing(not used atm)
2) the coil wires, came with all that is need to hook up coil and colors match
3) a three wire connector, power, ground, tach

Re: Mallory Dist problems
Ok three possibilities I can think of. 1) Coil wires are too close to the main dist power wire - I can easily move or shield them. 2) The Summit TFI coil don't jive and it wants a Mallory TFI coil - I do have a Mallory coil but it's on another car and I'll have to dig it out. 3) The HEI dist wasn't ...

Mallory Dist problems
Ok just installed a brand new Mallory Max-fire in my sbc, I also made & tested new MSD plugs wires. Won't rev and pops out the exhaust, once I finally got it warm to set the timing exactly it still won't rev. I have checked the firing order over n over and over! 12.4 volts at the dist and the di...

Re: Tach flutter
I didn't bother since I was gonna change the dist to a Mallory Max-fire and now I have a whole new problem I'll start a thread for. Chances are I'll put the old HEI with new cap n rotor in later.Rizzle wrote: BOOT, did new or cleaned cap/rotor solve the issue?

Re: Tach flutter
Well despite being all new and cleaned well when assembled, I pulled the cap off and everything looks like crap n worse than the stuff I just replaced. So once again I learn, just because it's all new don't mean it's not the problem and big name parts don't mean good quality. Well that last part don...

Re: Tach flutter
I use electric contact cleaner to clean the dist/cap/rotor and only handle the rotor with gloves.

Re: Tach flutter
Forgot to mention it shakes bout +/- 100-300rpm where it actually is, but still accelerates at the normal rate. No shift light or rev limiter

Tach flutter
Been having some upper rpm only tach flutter, the last 500-800 before shift and it was only on the top of 2 or 3 but now it's doing it in 1st. Otherwise the needle is a rock at idle and up to that point so it's not the ground. It's a HEI with msd green module and a remote coil. I've swapped coils an...

Re: Testing spark plugs
I looked more into the aircraft testing and if it works for them, guess I'll see what it does for me.
Thx for the replies!
edit: I don't mean an actual tester, just testing all plugs.
