Re: Shelby/DeTomaso P70 7Liter (Windsor base block race eng)
I ran the criss cross engine to well over 10,000 many times without valve train issues. Ti valves of course. I have not found the original intent of the design. The heads were iron and designed for bolt down ( hydraulic) rockers like a conventional 351C , and the exhaust port was standard 351C 4V. T...

Re: Shelby/DeTomaso P70 7Liter (Windsor base block race eng)
Smokey was in charge of the "stock block" Indy program for 1969 . This was an all aluminum 351C block and heads . SK42617 was the block and SK42624 was the head. Both were cast in Oct of '68 far before the engine was known to exist. I own one block and three pairs of heads at the moment. T...

Re: Lowering exh rocker ratio.
The 18* Chevy head liked shorter exhaust duration in a comp eliminator engine I ran. Maropoluos said the head was too good on the exhaust side and was over scavenging , so the shorter duration compensated. The problem with the GM 18deg head, wasn't that the exhaust was too good. The issue was the c...

Re: Lowering exh rocker ratio.
On my Boss/Cleveland head , "I" felt the added duration allowed more "scavenging" from the exhaust. A Ford engineer ( long ago) when high ports became the rage ,said that all I had to do with the "stock'' port ( way less than ideal flow bias) was increase the exhaust duratio...

Re: Lowering exh rocker ratio.
I have used a lot of cams with a few degrees shorter duration on the exhaust for limited circle track engines that have manifolds and ex pipe limitations. I always thought it helped with Torque and helped with the back flow problems at overlap. The 18* Chevy head liked shorter exhaust duration in a...

Re: Lowering exh rocker ratio.
Steve, I run conventional Boss 302 heads and have for well over 40 years been running shorter lift on the exhaust (.060-.100 less) The late ''Racer Brown" (rip) put me on this idea as he said "you are not flowing the same medium , and a flow bench can't simulate that". I have three an...

4223 - 850 CFM center squirter . Production , over the counter. Throttle blades drilled for idle. Their "special" carburetors were done by the late Harold Droste and had hand stamped serial numbers.

Re: Naked Ti rods
There is a coating company in Valencia (Ca) that does DLC coating on ti valves. Can't remember the name but they do them for DelWest.

Re: Hydraulic roller lifters tick only under crankcase vacuum
Bill This is a real interesting situation. Vacuum in the crank case is "everywhere " DUH. But thinking of that "I" think the vacuum IS pulling oil out of the lifter causing minor lifter collapse because the "restriction" that keeps oil in the lifter has decreased ( esse...

Re: heptadecagonal hone job - Howdy Doo-it ?
I agree with Bill and some of the others , this is an oil ring wear issue. I have seen it on one particular brand of oil ring in their "standard tension" 3/16ths oil rings. never seen it with a 3MM oil ring.

Re: chain auto parts stores vs internet sellers
Rock Auto "can" have some great deals. I bought 6 HP1 Fram filters for $1 ea! What you have to be careful of is "shipping" . IF I bought ONE filter for ONE dollar and it cost $8 to ship it , it's better to buy at Autozone for $3 + tax! Other internet sellers offer FREE shipping. ...

DLC pins are in the $50-60 range. Great idea but not an "absolute". 1.065 compression height piston will work. Should be in the low 400s with a dome , less as a flat top. EZ on parts @7,500 all day long.

Re: Am I on the Right Track; Budget Lightweight 289 SBF Short Block Build…
Light weight pins are a POOR choice especially in a road race application . Thin wall induces pin flex which costs power and continued flex will cause the pin to fail costing you LOTS of money. Been there , done that.
