Re: Intake Manifold Porting Show ‘n Tell

Darren Morgan has said before some of the roughest looking ports as in finish have made the best power.
As said the shine is for the customer otherwise they would melt down

Re: Total Seal zero-gaps

The only engine that I've ever built with a set of Total Seal zero-gap top rings smoked above 4000 rpm or so. At the same exact instant, the engine rattled, as in a compression knock when the oil reached the chambers. This I suppose was because the oil diluted the octane rating of the gasoline and ...

Re: The truth on bowl sizing

It's a balancing act to try and turn air/ fuel some say make bowl 100 - 105% of valve diameter, some guys blow the bowl out big and install bigger valve to sell flow bench numbers. There is no correct answer or one size fits all. You have to test for your application, the only advice I can offer is ...

Re: Carb recommendation SBC 383

AED got back with me, his recommendation is a 950ho which he says flows 820cfm.i believe he said it was a 750 body in a 850 throttle body. That's a $750 carb. I can get a Brawler 750dp for a little over $400 . My question is, will that almost twice as expensive carb make 30 more horsepower over the...

Re: Why 4 degrees?

Whats not being talked about here much is the amount of overlap duration a combination can handle. Valve location, valve angle, port height, operating range, curtain Area, intake runner length, header design etc. have influence on overlap. The Lobe Center is another quick indicator of how Overlap a...

Re: Why 4 degrees?

1500 - 2000 rpm say in a drag race application, below that everything is along for the ride in my opinion. I do everything I can to limit low speed reversion. That's curious, low speed being the start of the 1500 to 2000 power range ? Or separate and around idle speed cruise etc. Overlap reversion ...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

Very similar to my testing results over last few years, you won't notice 10 - 15 hp in a street deal. Most guys don't want to get after converter, rear gear/ tyres to get the best performance due to want to cruise the hwy at 60mph This time it'll be drag race first. This is why I had the cam specifi...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

Get exhaust lobe right and rocker ratio change is almost margin of error stuff. When it's all said and done, this part to me makes the most sense. But, further to what I had posted about changing the exhaust system itself, i.e. larger headers or conversely, going from open headers (PipeMax spec'd) ...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

That raises a question I've had since the first I read about someone using less ratio on the exhaust as opposed to the intake. What's the logic there? Is it compensating for a cam spec or working with the specifics of a particular port? I'm the seeing the answer is in all of the above. A guy like S...

Re: 383 sbc first dyno experience

Smooth, quiet flowing port with appropriately sized cross sectional areas trump flow numbers I suspect? Yes,I agree I am no expert at all but most of the time now when I use my bench it is more about listening to the port at all depressions and lifts. I start my lifts at 0.250" and run to 0.10...
