Roller cam bearings

Post by len-rob »

I have a factory production 1970 351 windsor block that I run. I run a solid roller cam, I switched cams a while back and also doing this I went with a set of 948-16 comp springs. the motor hasn't been run much maybe 5 1/8 mile passes and 5 1/4 mile passes. yesterday when I started the engine getting ready to load up I noticed a little ticking sound that got worse and worse. So i pulled the valve cover and had one really loose rocker I also noticed metal shavings under. I pulled the rocker and it had beat the end of the pushrod shut. It had spun the cam bearing. Is there any way to install roller cam bearings in this block. I have alot of money in this block it has the billet 4 bolt caps on it screw in freeze plugs, it also has been poured. Or is there any fix, is these springs to big for regular cam bearings, I never had this trouble before with the smaller springs.

The cam bearings turned out to be fine it was just the 5/16 .080 pushrods that gave up.

On the Ford small blocks most of them go to a 55MM cam tunnel in the first 4 journals and rear is 50MM

cam bearings

If your plan on turning some rpm, and want accurate cam timing, i think it would be worth while to use the roller cam bearings. they not only reduce friction a certain percent, the allow slightley more oil everywhere else. and most importantly for performance. they locate the camshaft perfectly in the center of the housing bore for the most accurate cam timing. good luck!
