Spark Plug Modifications

Post by katman »

I've heard of people cutting the ground electrode off at the edge of the center electrode as opposed to going across the center electrode. Any comments good or bad? I've got a 79 Z28 359ci about 10.5:1, runs mid 12s. MSD Digital 6+, MSD billet distributor, MSD HVC II coil, MSD wires, Accel plugs .035. Normally Aspirated now going to install Nitrous Express 2 stage plate soon. Would this mod help? Should I increase the gap to say .045?

There plugs that can also be bought that way, such as the Autolite racing plugs. It is suppose to unshroud the electrode. It's another flavor of the week in my opinion. Any benefit might be related to plugs position.

I can say with utmost certainty that on the pentroof 4 valve boosted apps we work with, cutting the ground strap 1/2 way over the center electrode does in fact cure misfires w/o having to keep dropping the gap down when running high boost.

If your going to run nitrous, the autolite race plug would be a good choice. The ground strap is thicker and that is a plus with nitrous.
