my own 68 velle w/454 CC ret port heads,flat top pistons would run 12.30's @112.mph 1.8860fts w/a stock convertor & LS6 cam
Changed to a Crane 290 Commander series et dropped to 12.0"s @115mph.
The 10" convertor dropped it to 11.65's & 1.6 60fts
Maybe had 9.1cr ran it on 91 octane.
results speak for themselves

What manufacturer/ cam series would help get the most out of what I have? I've only used comp cams in the past and only a few at that! I've only used their magnum cams. Do yhe extreme's work for my application? Should I look at another manufacturer? Thank you again and I'll order the cam on Monday most likely. This motor isn't worthy of a Mike Jones cam but my other will be!
someday I'll have something more than Junk!!

Back from the dead!

My 496 has a good old CC 282S cam in it with just about 9.5 to 1 CR. Merlin cast-iron large ovals.

When I got it as a 454, it had a CC 280 Magnum in it and down around 7.8 or so CR. Ran fine in a big 4x4 with large by huge tires on it.

BBC's are POWERFUL old SOB's, imho...

I still have 3 new cams for it.

1. A UDHarold 278/249, 110/106, .618" lift and needs .018 hot lash solid cam.

I bugged Harold for several years to make me a solid lifter copy of CC's great old 288AR solid street roller and he did and he gave it to me. How I miss Harold!!

2. An ERSON Hi-Flow AH, 284/218, 111/111, .542" lift Hi-cam.

3. And a Clevite Hi-cam at 309/221/327/235, 115/110.5, .500"/.506" lift.

Can I collect shit??

CamKings cam looks good.. The 3600 stall converter will be a lot of fun for street/dragracing.. You may see as much as 4100 flash stall (on slicks) behind your 454.. 4.11 just right.

You can always supercharge it later if/when the opportunity presents.

I've done some port cleanup and bowl work and tappered the guides myself (did my best with my limited porting knowledge). It is getting new rings and bearings and a cam. I don't want a small "towing" cam instead I want more performance but I don't have much compression. I know with the low comp. it won't make much power but that's what I'm working with. I have a Edelbrock performer 2-O intake or a Team G single plane oval port and 1 7/8" headers. Can any of you tell me a cam that will work good? I'll get the right springs also. It's for a 3500lb vehicle with either (undesided) 3.73 or 4.11 gears th400 with a kit and I have a stock converter or a 1ton 350 small block converter(I was told it would stall around 1,300 rpm?) and I have a holeshot 3600 converter. I want as much as the compression will give me. Sorry for the long winded post and I know it's a poor combo but I have everything but the cam and springs. Thanks.
Well here is something that you can look forward too. 2 years ago I build a 461 BBC shortblock much like yours but with flat top pistons, steel crank and balanced. On the top I had used 236 peanut port heads with some mild porting, the cam I used was a Comp Magnum 282S (I like solids) and it's .561 lift and 236°duration. I topped it off with an Air gap plus a 850 Mighty Demon, the 461 also had 1 3/4" headers. The car ran the best of an 11.70's@112 mph. Had I used the radial slicks I use now I am sure the car would do an 11.55@114, so see there's hope for you and yes my 461 was measured at 7.8 to 1 compression.
