Stacking Head Gaskets?

Post by runawy9 »

Is it ok to stack steel shim head gaskets like the FelPro 1094?
I need a compressed thickness of .033-.035
this looks like my best bet by stacking two gaskets together.
Or does anyone now where I could get a gasket for a 4.00 bore small chevy in a 4.135 X .033-.035? I have already tried Cometic.

How much squeeze are you planing to run.
We used to do it in 11.1 327's back in the day before gasket slection was good.
Cometic will also custom make a pair for you.

Compression will be around 11.4 to 1 with a 150-200 shot of nitrous.
Like to keep the quench area at a minimum to keep compression up.

I've stacked stamp steel Mr Gasket head gasket on a 468 BBC with a measured 13:1. I did it also with a Felpro Perma Torque and a stamp steel on a BBC with aluminum heads and better than 13:1. With the aluminum head, I just made sure the steel gasket was against the block. I always used a good spray on sealer also.

We (FelPro Performance) now offer a Perma-Torque MLS (multi-layered-steel) gasket for the Chevy Small Block that is .026" with a 4.100" gasket bore.
The part number is #1142-026 FelPro.
or
You can use our #1142 which is .041"

Stacking only two gaskets, I wouldn't worry. Just use silver paint between the stacked gaskets, assemble wet & let the paint dry before running the motor. You'll never be able to separate the two gaskets again & neither will the engine.

Certainly, with the protruding embossments facing one another is usually better sealing during "head lift" than simply stacking
