151 Iron Duke buildups

To my knowledge, the 151 shares NOTHING with the Pontiac 301 except the Pontiac name.

A 3-liter version of the 151 went into a bajillion boats as a sterndrive powerplant.

Pontiac 301 and the 151 have same bore and stroke-else as abve- nothing in common.
To get sort of back to the original post, if one was to try to hot rod one, the marine crank is reported to be a good piece as a starting point. I think is 3.6 stroke.

I'm pretty sure the marine (which is the 181, also called Vortec 3.0: www.rotatingright.com/pdf/3.0%20Litre%20Brochure.pdf ) is the old 153. It's not crossflow.

The 2.8/2.9 Canyon/Colorado 4cyl, has not turned up elsewhere.

SAAB used a 2.3 Ecotech.

Went to my favorite machine shop; looked through his "Engine Rebuilder" magazines and found a couple of articles on the 151. The thing IS a descendant of the 153 Chevy engine; but over time got so much development that it became unrecognizable.

My machinist buddy was telling me he uses BBC 1.7 rocker arms on his 151. Seems to be an easy swap.

Back in the 1980's Pontiac introduced the Super Duty Iron Duke. The original 1984 Indy Fiero Pacecars had these. They came in 2.5. 2.7, 3.0, and 3.3 liter combinations. Ebay has these parts occasional and the week of October 20th, a NOS SD IV head sold for only $ 202.00 USD.

You can research these for yourselves. The 3.3 L were known to push 370hp @ flywheel and rev up to 9K rpms. I have built several 151 H.O. versions at about 166 hp @ 5800 rpm using S-10 shortblocks and "R" Code heads with 1.94in/1.60ex valves. There are many high performance parts out there if you do internet searches. I have built some for less than $1,500USD for Fieros and Grand Ams. They are still holding up, so I am told.

I typically prefer keeping my own in the 130 - 140 hp range and compare it to the early Honda Accord H-22A four cylinders in preformance. Being on a militray pay budget, I keep it as simple and affordable as I can. I am hoarding as many 151 H.O. heads as I can. They come with 1.94 valves and quenched chambers.

Go to you tube and type Smokey Yaniks Hot Vapor Fiero. It's a 151 Iron Duke and had incredible horse power, low emmissions, and 50mpg! Smokey Yunick’s Hot Vapor Fiero; 51 mpg and 0-60 in less than 6 Seconds!

I had a 151 4 cylinder my buddy used it racing dirt track back in the 80s at saltwell exit in wv most guys used the same engine in the 4 cylinder class because it was at the time the biggest 4 cylinder available stock the motor was invincible I had one in a chevy citation and the car was built strange alot of stuff went bad fast but the biggest thing I remember is driving the car to the junkyard and trying to blow it up before i got there and it would not blow it was still running perfectly as I pulled it in to the junk yard to sell for junk. I remember telling the guy working that this is a good motor don't smash it save it and he did he sold it the same day to a guy wanting to build a race car

Thanks to help from Mike on roller camshaft, French Grimes on injection setup, dart LS head, this thing would turn 9000 all day, It sounded like a BBC when it idled.
Very fun project, my son at the time was about 19, he did most of the machining with alittle guidance, he had a blast pulling this, won his class multiple times.
