mech fuel pump recommendation

Post by hgprem400 »

can i get some recommendations for a mech fuel pump for a sbc that will support 600+ hp for drag racing. i am looking at the carter 172 gph pump. advertised flow is one thing, has anyone had actual success with one or any other pump? cheers

Well, people will often get into a heated debate over this topic. But as a point of reference, 800 hp BBC's will typically consume around 54 gph at WOT. So, if your pump is a 14 psi fuel pump that is regulated down to around 6.5 psi, it will be enough to deal with the G forces you'll encounter, and you should be good to go. A good number of guys have done just fine like this running low 10's. But if your pump is a low pressure pump that does not require a regulator, then you could have some delivery issues, due to G forces.

Also, Big Joe once told me that if your free flow rating is twice your actual consumption rate, you'll be fine.

To calculate your fuel requirements estimate your peak horsepower then divide by 12. This is figuring with a BSFC of .50. Then multiply by 1.5 for a safety factor.

Example:
600 hp /12=50 gallons per hour.
50 X 1.5=75 gallons per hour.

Don't waste your money on a pump that flows 300 gallons per hour, spend it somewhere else.

NEXTEL cup motors can make over 780HP with a CV Products billet fuel pump. That should do the job for you.

Here's a Ebay link for a used one but, price is a little high:

Look at RobbMc fuel pumps. I run mid 10's in an AMX using his adjustable version.

Look at RobbMc's 1000hp pump, or the Holley Ultra HP 200gph (i have this one but expensive)

Been running a 172 in a 550hp 383 for years never lays down.

Too bad there seems to be no rebuild kits for them anymore love this pump.
Ran 1/2" line from the bowls clear to the pickup/sock. May be overkill but works great..no regulator
